Surely you mean Waistcoat or Cummerbund.
Braces are essential for holding the trousers up, even if you have a cummerbundYou can wear a belt with a cummerbund. I just think that they look a bit weird with braces.
But you are right about the waistcoat.
Mind, I also wear a cummerbund with a double-breasted jacket because I overheat and so the jacket's off after dinner. So feel free to ignore me. :)

I know how to wear a suit but not a tuxedo. What's the do's and dont's?
Don't: Call it a tuxedo, unless you want people to think you're a filthy colonial.
Do: Keep it simple.
Do: Braces or a cummerbund. I prefer the latter, but.
Do: Keep the jacket black and the shirt white.
Do: Have a proper bow tie. They're really not that hard. And they look good even when undone.
Do: remember that the pleats of a cummerbund face upwards, so that you can keep your opera tickets in them.
Don't: Forget the pocket square. Fold it square or with points depending on your lapels. -
