Not owning a TV is alternative by definition, purely because such a tiny per cent of the population shun them...
TVs are the number one weapon in the arsenal of advertisers and media corporations whose sole aim in life is to convince us to consume...refusing to allow them into your living room is admirable.A person who spends their life doing altruisitc works will possibly feel more "fuller" than someone who spent their life making sure they had the latest jeans or consumed themselves with their image.....there must be something in the bible about this, maybe I'll convert.
You're right, I do make initial perceptions of image conscious people, unfortunately for them my perception probably isn't what they'd wish ....ooh they look alternative / unique /trendy /interesting......my perception is more like ....just another image obsessed, self-conscious dullard.
Personally, I don't really bother about what complete strangers think of my "image"...it's totally meaningless....unless of course there perception stops me from getting a job or something like that, then it becomes discrimination....
-
I don't lead an alternative lifestyle myself but I admire people who do....we probably see very few people who do, no matter how "way out" they look.....I see some real freaky looking people in Tescos but they're just buying bread and beans on the way back to their bedsit to watch Eastenders or listen to xfm like everyone else.....alternative lifestylers are out there, they may not cross our paths very often in the city, or they may not stand out in a crowd?
How about:
Living in a Tantric yoga commune.
Giving everything up to go and work as a volunteer in Africa.
self-sufficiency
not owning a TVtoo tired to think of anymore.

It only says you're concerned about image, you're wrong to assume everybody is like you....also there's a big difference between wanting to look good or wearing clothes that suit you to projecting an "image"...."pretending" seems very common in this city amongst all ages...not just teenagers... they're all exhibiting the same behaviour / personality just in a different coloured shirt / jeans / hairdo /bike......they're not in the least bit unique. Living a genuine alternative lifestyle however is actually unique and interesting......working for the man, paying rent / mortgage, shopping at Tescos, then in your free time seeking out "alternative" or obscure music / clothes / bikes / scenes....is achingly normal, millions of people do it and will seem unbelievably pointless when you're on your deathbed.
Yes it really does have a tube map on the downtube.....!

"I simply think it is human nature to want some sort of exclusivity, to be unique, be it in the way they dress, the music they listen to or the bike they ride"
Speak for yourself!
the music you listen to or the band-name tee shirts you wear say absolutely nothing about you....except that you're just another empty-head concerned with your "image".....the London disease.
Inclusivity!

I am both a "cheap-skate" and a "Kraut-Lover" as I come from Portsmouth and my girlfriend's German!
I do have a postie bag in the cupboard, but I never use it, coz it's a piece of shite, although excellent value at £0.00p....highly recommended to less-privileged newbie couriers....always looks good on the back of someone riding an Apollo bike.
-
here's my jansport one:
http://www.jansport.com/international/eu/products/K414.html
My girlfriend got it cheap coz it had no strap, but you can clip on any other strap to it....it has plastic loops in webbing loops to clip straps on....I've reinforced these with a metal key-ring at at each end...probably a good idea with any clip-on strap type bag!
-
Interesting that most people are just recommending the bag that they already have! is it because they spent so much money on an overpriced bit of cloth that they would feel stupid criticising it? nevertheless I'm gonna join in:
Ortlieb Express Extra Large in silver...when I was working it was the only one in London...not sure now....100% waterproof, loads of space and stiff inserts to protect your back from nobbly things....it was £25 from a German website (slight second...but I couldn't find any faults) http://www.globetrotter.de
I've no need to buy a bag anymore coz I've got two or three hanging round....but as I'm not a courier anymore I wouldn't buy a courier bag, I would buy a two-strapper.....unbelievably Ortlieb make one in Silver! ...it's gotta be the best back-padded bag out there too.
My girlfriend bought me an ace laptop bag by Jansport for Xmas that looks neither messengery or briefcasey yet isn't too smart while being smart enough!
loads of extra space for tools, pump and spare pair of shoes and shirt and so far has been pretty tough. -

i still get the fear when i think about my near miss, what makes it bad is the fact that the driver had me in his sights for nearly a minute, i was in front of him waiting at the lights and for about 400 yards of road where i was in front of him at all times riding 1m from the kerb.
he was quite happy to drive into a gap between the kerb and a traffic island that clearly was only wide enough for him and not me, i heard the rumble of the lorry behind and in a split second made a decision to slam the brakes on (was on slicked mtb with disks) he shot past me at about 50mph i was doing about 30.
this was going downhill at the end of the harrow road and i unfortunately didn't catch up with him as he was heading to the A40
If i hadn't stopped he would have to choose between me or a traffic island and bollard, the attitude of tipper/lorry drivers and the way they behave means i probably wouldn't be able to type this.
what also pisses me of is you all probably have a similar story. going about your business and being intimidated off the road by 7+ tons of metal driven by fat idiots -
31trum(murtle) had the same problem on goldtec, after putting on for 1/2 turn undoing then tightening a bit more, repeating the process until fully on. now it ain't going nowhere, good hub by the way.
same for me, i spent about half an hour slowly putting the cog on and off going 1/4 turn further on each time and stopping to check it was parallel and not cross threading.
nice hubs but i would like to see Hope make road/fixed hubs as their finishing is slightly better than goldtec. -

don't forget the Miche cranks
