i have a dura-ace front brake it's a nice colour and has a nice ratcheted cable thing on the side to let you take the wheel out, i picked it out by trying all the brakes in the shop and picking the one that felt best at the lever if a cheaper one had felt just as nice i would have brought that instead.
i would have thought that as long as it's dual-pivot and not made of cheese you don't have to spend £50 on a record/dura-ace one to get good performance.
if you are on a budget then tektro are good (same as cane creek but cheaper)
don't forget good pads, i'm thinking of investing in some swiss stop greens when my current set wear out dunno if they are any good though? -

I reckon the cheapest way to sort it would be to buy a new back wheel, with a fixed hub. You won't need to worry about the cranks (probably), one of the 2 chainrings should provide you with the correct chainline. Chainline = VERY important on a fixed wheel bike. Surly do a fixie conversion kit for cassette hubs i think, but the best thing to do would be to just get a new back wheel. Keep an eye on the forum - someone will be selling one soon enough, or check ebay, or just pop into blb/cavendish cycles/brixton cycles and buy one. They won't set you back too much for the basic one.
But basically you should be able to get away with fixafying your bike without much trouble at all. You'll probably want:
- Back wheel + cog + lockring (should be able to get this for well under £80)
- Chain bolt extractor (£6) to re-adjust the chain
- Back wheel + cog + lockring (should be able to get this for well under £80)

Thanks for the tips guys. I am tempted (£130 is a LOT for a rear hub...) to go down the bling route and get phil hubs - having trouble finding that 110 mm adaptor kit that pip was talking about though. I think you're right about the slotted axles too. a spot of filing should sort that out though :)
I like the idea of buying 2 of the sovus ones. Annoying that i can't find anything between the ultra cheap and the top of the line though. Can you get conversion kits for any hubs?

My armstrong frame that I'm collecting parts for has 110 mm spaced rear dropouts.
20 minutes of googling/ebaying has turned up nowt in the way of 110 mm rear hubs. Someone (I think object17?) informed me that suzue make narrow hubs, but i couldnt find any in my search. So, i guess, does anyone happen to have any 110 spaced rear hubs lying around? I'd be willing to part with cash. Alternatively, as I am going to get the frame re-sprayed anyway, does anyone know how much extra a bit of cold-setting would set me back? The frame is steel by the way. This would make finding a pair of (colourful) hubs a lot easier! Also the dropouts seemed to take some rather narrow axles too, but i think this may just be the (woeful) paintjob. Sheldon our lord and master has a bit of a tutorial on cold-setting, but the thought of getting a lump of timber and applying force to my bike makes me slightly scared. However, has anyone tried this?
Thanks a bunch

Do it do it do it! I'm converting an old road frame right now, and it actually needs NARROWER hubs than my pista. You can get 110 mm spaced hubs can't you? googles
