hippy: 1600 meters or thereabouts.
Oh and for the record my gatorskins (gatorSKIN) was ok for about a week, then got 5 punctures in 4 days before giving up and getting an armadillo. 1 after a couple of days, then 2 on the cambridge ride, and 2 on the way in to college the next day. Maybe i just managed to run over every single sharp object on the road during that time... havent had any trouble with an armadillo so far. Oh except falling off.

tynan This question (and its variations) is often set up as some kind of deep-seated profundity, but is in fact a trivial mechanical question that relies on equivocation for it's 'mystery'.
I think the real use of that question is that, by evoking a sense of mystery, it provokes thought in providing an answer. What is important is not the answer, but the fact that it makes people think.

i personally wouldn't go any lower unless you plan on doing long distances, you don't say how long you have been riding fixed but i found i could climb better/faster after a few weeks of riding.
don't you find they have to wait for you at the top of the hills?
unless the geared riders are a lot fitter than you? a paddywaggon is possibly heavier than your mates bikes? -
£16 quid is cheap as chips, how old is the frame? I'd check the dropout spacing (120-130mm are easy to get hubs for, less than 120 limits your choices fairly severely), and more importantly the seatpost size. There's a chance it might be some stupid size. I guess it doesn't matter if the supplied seatpin is any good though...

It's a fact of life that if you're riding with roadies you're always going to be lagging behind on a fixie, i think. For riding round town (assuming your town is london) 42x16 is fairly nice. could try a 17t sprocket if you find it a bit heavy, would probably be cheaper than a comparable 39t chainring.

it's gear inches for the road, ratio for off-road.
don't ever forget that
