What they really need to do is to use RFID tags.
Not only could you put them in non-visible and non-damaging places (under bar tape, under rim-tape, under saddle, inside BB, etc)... but the police could use a medium powered RFID reader and walk down brick-lane and immediately identify all of the stolen bikes.
Why doesn't someone do this?! Seems so freaking obvious.
I'd pay £5 for a RFID tag and registration kit. The tags would actually only cost pennies to make, it's the cost of registering them in a central database and providing the tech to the place that the fee would really cover.

Nah, not yet. But we all stopped a while ago and asked how long we'd all been riding, and the answer universally was "a long time".
Just you wait until it gets all hipster around these parts and we start having people sign up who haven't ridden anything since the age of seven and want in on this "fixie thang". Then we'll see how patient and tolerant we all are ;)

morgan Ahh yum the medicine Malort! I dont think she got any but i could be totally mistaken. We might just have to ship you guys a few bottles.
We might just have to accept.
Feel free to make this place a surrogate home in the meantime. Just don't be talking football near me or anything daft like that ;)
Oh, and we'll take care of ms. ulty for you. Though I'm fairly sure she's probably soaked to the bone somewhere at the moment.

Naz hasn't helped unfortunately. It should've just been trodden on.
#1 Rule of making a forum work... keep it welcoming and inclusive always.
Which means stomping on oldies who should know better, and booting people who start flamewars for at least a few weeks so that they learn their lesson.
And yes, when it happens, that's what I will do on this forum. The only way to keep these places cool is to keep them friendly and non-cliquey as much as is possible.

morgan Just stoppin in to say hi. I'm morgan, also from Chicago and the Chicago Fixed Gear Forum, just like Ms. Ulty. Drink a few for us tonight. We will do the same. Cheers londonfgss!
Oh we will. Especially if ms. ulty bought along that bottle of Malort.
Is chifg really imploding? A real shame if true.

velocity boy LCC News, they're going to have an elevated viewing area for the TdF prologue.
It'll be situated next to Hyde Park at Achilles Way.
I've signed up as a group, so can get 10 riders into this viewing area. All we have to do is join a group ride to the spot beforehand.
Now yes, you don't have to do this to view the prologue, and there will be lots of other places you can squeeze down the side of fences to get a viewing. But the idea of a decent view, not too crowded, elevated and at a key junction that you can see the racers go in both directions, with refreshments at hand... it's a winner in my eyes.
The 10 spots I've asked for are not just open to londonfgss.com members, bring anyone you want, but they have to ride there so clearly we're talking cyclists only.
The full details are on the LCC site.
If we decide not to use the LCC area, then cool I'll let go of the places by letting them know. But if we are using them, just whisper me how many people you can definitely bring... I'll probably take 3 spots, so that leaves 7 from the outset.
Nope, right thread... you're just confusing me Brick.
I group registered 10 spots, and need to confirm them. As mentioned in the quoted bit, we need to be as a group and join one of the rides in. That's the only way to get to the viewing platform as it's inside the TdF route and is part of the cordoned off viewing areas set aside for sponsors, and other organisations.
So, we all took places earlier, now I have been emailed to confirm the details... so I need to provide them with a list of 10 names as well as the ride we'll be joining.

Ride AC: Wandsworth. Location and time to be confirmed.I think we should pick a central-ish one, or one slightly North or East. Why? Because obviously we're coming together from all over, and central is as equidistant as possible. Slightly North or East because I'm sure more of you come from those directions. It would also mean that I could ride past ms. ulty and pick her up too so that she doesn't get lost.
Camden seems a good idea to me, location confirmed too which makes it easier... what do you guys reckon?
Anyhow, roll call of those attending:

My plan is simple:
1) Insure it fully
2) A single mini d-lock if you're going to be sitting near and watching it
3) A mini d-lock plus a thick cable/chain if it's going to be out of view
4) Never leave it outside overnightAnd quit worrying. You've stopped all the opportunity thieves, and if the bike still goes walkies you had it insured and will be fine.

Cool, we should still be around. Ms. Ulty might be a mess by then though.
