“ I think people often underestimate what an expensive and restrictive ball ache this sort of thing can be.”
Especially if you are not part of the local community/farmer/smallholding network.
Lots of things are lent, traded, borrowed or swapped but that isn’t going to happen overnight and if you are outside of that loop things cost a fortune.
They cost a fortune even with help! -
As I (hopefully) will be getting a few acres, we had been discussing what else we could be doing with the land. At the moment its set up as two big plots next to each other
Perhaps part of the field to create a safe space for travellers? the law makes it increasingly difficult for them to find a legal place to stay.
The chap I mentioned further up thread who has the woodland for sale tried to sell some land nearby in small plots for travellers but the borough councillors created a right stink and wouldn’t grant planning permission but if it’s for temporary use planning shouldn’t be a problem? wheeled caravans not static should be o.k. -

It’s a fact of life in some parts of the country. i’ll defend their right to keep their heritage alive which has a rich history across Europe along with persecution, people remember the holocaust but the Roma suffered and died in the camps too.
It’s just the casual attitude to ‘borrowing’ other peoples things i’m not a fan of. though most of that comes from a minority of the ‘gorjas’ who no longer subscribe to the travelling way of life of their previous generations.
also a ‘do as you likey’ is anyone who doesn’t give a toss about their actions.

I know 2 woods in the SE on that website for sale (and one sold), £100k doesn’t exactly get you much space.
My dad managed them for a decade as the owner lived abroad and security was the biggest problem particularly as it bordered a bridleway and the ‘do as you likey’s’ lived not far away.
Lost count of the times the padlocks and chains on the gates were replaced. -
Confession time.
Was previously in a small flat and sold some PMC speakers and my pre/power for an all in one streamer/amp as the PMC’s bass overwhelmed the room plus a sloping dormer roof messed with the sound stage a fair bit, it was always a compromise sound wise.
New flat and we made do with a single Sonos for a bit, fixed the Unitqute screen and finally found the remote to change the menus from French to English and been using it for a few months. Fiddled with the menu’s adding some digital radio stations and when looking at the ‘speakers’ menu noticed there was a setting for Small or Large.
Bit of googling and it turns out it’s been on Small setting which has a 100hz low cut!? It’s probably been on this setting since I have had it, I knew the little Leema Xero’s were not going to shake the room but now I have a rhythm section :-) -

Don’t underestimate the need for getting the access right. if there’s a gateway to a main road then certain types of people may see that as an invitation to spend some time on the land and go about their itinerant ways and habits, or rubbish to be dumped or used for their recreation (motorbikes/dogging/dog fighting etc)
Ideally a plot that’s access is through an existing farm with no footpath/bridleway nearby will remove a lot of trespass issues. -

Yep best to keeps ones eyes fixed to the floor or on the page of a good book.
It’s best policy to avoid any interaction with people you have not already been formally introduced to for fear of causing offence or being labeled a sexual predator.
No matter how innocent your ‘lovely day for it’ comment or smile was intended there is alway the potential for it to be taken as a threat against the person. -

No but my extended family co-own my late grandfather’s 3/4 of an acre that he had as a small market garden.
Don’t underestimate it’s upkeep as left it’s going to get scrubby/unruly very quickly and if you put a shed/summer house on it stuff will get nicked or a local teen will try and grow weed on the roof!
We put type 2 down and rolled it to keep drivable access when it’s wet and a new gate and post up at significant cost in time/money despite being able to borrow stuff and get a gate from a farmer.
You will need a strimmer and somewhere to store it.
Half of it is grass the rest is just left as place to season wood and brambles as it’s too much work, the family have BBQ’s and parties/gathering in the summer but they live in the village or nearby. There is a small slither of woodland that leads up to the field from the village that came up for sale which went for £15k which is nuts as it’s not workable if you wanted to coppice it and if you are going to sit in and enjoy it then it’s a steep slope with no vehicle access and very dark, you will also get eaten alive by mozzies.
A couple from London bought it and they visit a few times a year, we thought about buying it together as it’s worth about £3k but not £15!?
They let us use the path through the middle to avoid walking on the road anyway.
You can buy woodland but that’s even more work unless it’s fully mature broadleaf and established so you get little growth at ground level, anything that’s been worked/coppiced goes to shit very quickly and a mess of impenetrable bramble/scrub, you can get help advice from the woodland trust in management just don’t touch anything with a TPO.
You can of course let out your plot and let for sheep/horses or managed woodland which will make upkeep easier but not rich. -
I get a blood blister under the big toe nail hill walking with trainers as there is no shank inside the shoe and no real support over the forefoot so my slim feet just hit the toebox when walking downhill, found the answer to be approach shoes which don’t allow as much movement and support the foot way better than a soft trainer they are also stiffer due to the shank.
No idea if some versions trail shoes come with enough support on the uppers but a lot of them look quite flimsy. -

I wear linen shirts and 3/4 shorts in hot places, if i have to look slightly smarter then a pair of Richard james Tencel fabric trousers that are a loose cut, a Rapha travel shirt (not sure of the model but i bought 3 of them years ago as they don’t crease and are some kind of breathable lightweight material) topped off with a thin unstructured uniqlo seersucker jacket, or a decent white T and the shirt undone which has a concealed placket and straight hem so it works a jacket
Look a bit like an architect/design history aficionado but at least not like a sweaty tourist. -

SRAM force 11speed rear mech that you can’t replace the rear spring, turns out you have to shim the mech outward to take up the slack in the spring. WTF it’s not even that old.
