So I have ignored this task as it’s a tricky job and i’m loath to take it on myself. the last strip of terrazzo on my windowsill is cast in place on a bed of cement so needs to be cut out.
After cogitation and some advice an angle grinder with a mortar/diamond cutting disk looks like the best option but whoever does the job will have to really careful not to break the glass.
I don’t mind knocking the metal frame as it’s going to be painted.
Not had any response from any trades as it’s not something anyone would want to take on willingly.
Anyone know of a tradesman who does stone/mortar precision cutting?
or should i bite the bullet and buy a grinder? my left hand is a bit fucked from a MTB accident and is already grizzling from other repetitive DIY tasks so would rather pay somebody to do the job as there is 5m of this to remove.
It sits on 2 layers of mortar, the big bit stays as thats holding the window frame ties in, the 2cm layer of terrazzo and mortar needs to go. -
Has anyone bought/used any of the recycled plastic surfaces?
wanted terrazzo for windowsill and niche for bathroom but you have to look after it and the ceramic look terrazzo tiles do not hold the pattern/colour through the material and I hate tile trims and want to see a nice cut edge, fine for the floor but will not work for the sills as there will be different tiles on wall so you can’t do a mitred corner and get the colour all the way through.it’s one of those materials where it’s ‘enquire for pricing’ which annoys the hell out of me.

I just did my bathroom on the cheap for 6.5k that’s my second cousin (who does bathrooms) doing the work and me doing any running around plus doing things efficiently so LVT flooring with no grout/adhesive/time wasting, me doing the self level. He did the tiling which would normally be subbed out as he’s not a tiler and we picked big tiles to make it faster and the finish is good enough for what i want.
that price includes new stud walls and a full skim as the walls were fooked after ripping the tiles off.
the suite was not bargain basement just decent stuff that didn’t look grim as it has to last 2 years of rental and then not let the flat down when i come to sell.Next bathroom we will try to do for £9.5k which will include some terrazzo, a tiler doing his thing, fancy custom metal powder coated vanity unit with reeded glass and satin bronze taps/towel radiator and the window reveal done in recycled plastic or perspex.
You can do things well without going silly you just have to put the work in sourcing, getting the right people and doing some of the work yourself. I have ripped out some of the bathroom already and will move all the rubble sacks and deal with waste collection as I want him doing the stuff i can’t do and do not want to pay him to stand in a queue at screwfix! appreciate this will not work for everyone and you might not have a ‘second cousin Dave’.
The plasterer was a bit of a find, nearly retired and from ‘Norf Kent’ but he starts at 7am as his wife gets up at 5am for work so he needs something to do, leaves just after lunch having cracked on with the job and charged me half London prices.

Empire of Light.
Quite endearing and beautifully shot but became an uncomfortable watch 3/4 of the way though as it deals with mental illness but films aren't always meant to be sweetness and light, some great acting and i'm sure it will get some awards nominations.
Margate/Dreamland was a perfect location for the story. -

"We could all do more useful things with the money, but I'm not sure why you expect an interest free loan from the rest of us to finance your projects”
I agree with this even though in the past i have not paid on account, people don’t seem to grasp the concept of keeping track of income and the long grace period you get being self employed to pay your tax, the on account payment is effectively the tax on the money you earned in the first half of the current tax year that ends in April.
There is also a mechanism to either be repaid or not pay it and you have plenty of time to see if you need to apply. seems perfectly fair to me and i’m not just on the outside looking in. -

My partner had the same tedious process, took several hours on the phone and many calls.
Between our 2 flats we were paying virgin £95 per month for broadband.
looking forward to ditching them myself once our new place is ready and paying £20 odd pounds per month. unfortunately community fibre isn’t ready yet and hyperoptic not available but there’s a few monthly/1 year options i need to explore. -
I did this a couple of days ago, hired a SDS drill and bought a 16mm bit, it sook 20-30 seconds per hole for the 90mm depth, make sure you are not set to hammer only!?
was fine until i hit a metal bar and the bit gripped at an angle on the metal and jammed, put it to hammer only and yanked hard and got it free eventually.
oh and it seems that garage defenders do actually work...

Im paying 24p night and 43p on Bulb economy 7 so thats around the night time rate or cheaper and would see a fair saving even though the winter months see the night time heating/hot water as the biggest part of the bill. no idea if you can even have a flat rate with 2 meters?
If you could I would swap but we are only here for another couple of months but will swap at new flat which is gas/electric. currently spending £1.90 a day there as just a drill/sander/multi tool and a light bulb being used, thats on EON as was the previous provider. i see a right faff with tyring to get the £65 fuel payment credit back of them we do switch, tempted to wait until we are in and using up that 2-3 months credit -

The terrazzo? Might keep the middle bits if they come out ok (most likely they will end up in the garage or offered to other residents if they need a replacement) have a granite place lined up to visit and pick something out, they do all the synthetic corian/silestone types as well as granite but will go for something in keeping with the building.
We will spoil it by adding secondary glazing but the slimmest we can find and with a RAL colour to match the windows which will be grey of a similar tone to the galvanised and I’ll polish the brass handles up.
I’m not a fan of white windows. -

And I Weigh 65kg…
It’s only 4cm of the terrazzo as the big bit comes off easily so a 4inch should do it as it’s just the top layer of mortar that needs to come off not the whole lump.
