I've used my current set up on a couple of biggish events, opting for compliance, a large cassette and bombish proof over full carbon lightness and I rode it to Greece and back with 17kg of luggage which for a trip of that distance I felt was pretty svelte.
I find if I go out and ride that bike like I do my out and out road bike it empties me out pretty quick.
There was always a nagging about how it must be easier to hold a higher average speed (If I could make it as comfortable as possible) but I now accept its a completely different thing.

Ass Saver Fendor Bendor is the rear and just one of their small fork guards which is more a headset thing because it didnt do much for my face. Doesn't save anyone behind you but keeps your arse clean and dry.
Even does the job on the XC bike, it you can get the right angle and the velcro strap tight enough it'll do the job on lots of bikes.

These do look good. In need of new pads having lost one of my pair last week (POC VPD Air). Might be a bit pricey though, I tended to just pull them down while pedalling but have been using trousers more often now and that not as easy.
Tried pedalling in some Dainese rental pads this week and I have the scars to prove it.

Ah my year in Queenstown was snatched by covid but went out for two weeks. Rode in Wanaka and Christchurch too, the bike up park up there is real good. Never got to do Rude Rock unfortunately.
