Tragic acts of terror in West Bank now. 60 Palestinians reported dead. Initial reports claim Israeli “settlers” (a term which I’ve today learned is ludicrously wrongly applied) are responsible. Relatedly, it seems several extremist Jewish groups operate as settler groups. Some of them are Zionists within Zionism, and consider only their group to be true Jews.

Can someone here explain this “settlers” phenomenon in an objective way? The parallels with South Africa and 1800s America are striking.

Bottom bracket service plus chainring swap is about £35 in my neck of the woods. Add another £20 for the inspection time and risk*, and I think that’s a reasonable amount.
*madison sent an email saying shops were shielded from liability if a crank failed after inspection, but even taking the risk of assuming that were true and didn’t result in any legal peril, what shop would want the bad publicity and guilt resulting from a customer having a severe accident after their crank was cleared as not affected?

Pearl Jam in their prime, when they were young and pumped and their star was in ascendancy. A great performance of an iconic band, topped by Eddie Vedder’s a 20ft trust fall into the audience.

In simpler times a young journalist would’ve written an article bashing Peder in SE London for the obscene amount of rubbish they produce with their plastic signs and red posts. Every 6 or 12 months every house in my neighbourhood that I was previously let or sold via Peder have a new red sign posted stealthily at the front of the property. At our neighbours they’ve hammered the signs into fences and brick walls, never repeating the same location. And the time we tried getting them to collect the most recent sign, we called over a dozen times and were fobbed off with ‘oh yes we’ll go get it’ answers. They’re assholes.

Explain that it would cost more to get a suitable frame and have it built up with your components than to buy a replacement. Bill in full for a new like-for-like bike, and if you find a suitable bike for cheaper afterwards you can say so and refund him some cash, and he’ll be a happy camper.
My unsolicited life advice: always, always charge people in full, and if you’re giving a discount make it explicit. It’s much harder to get additional payment after charging too little and realising the problem is larger than expected. No customer has ever been angry to have a partial refund, but having to pay twice pisses everyone off.

US republicans’ penchant for action movie sound bites making the world unsafer.
Lots of merited concern for the hostages, but not much of a care for the 2 million Palestinians. I’m not picking sides in this, but even in the absurdly impossible case that every last Palestinian politically supported Hamas, what, are we just supposed to be OK with 2 million people being slaughtered indiscriminately?

From the BBC timeline. Sadly the killing is only beginning, as Israel is setting up to invade and flush out Hamas.
I find it interesting that Israeli national defence psychology is well-reflected in their chosen combat system, Krav Maga. (which is an effective base system, fantastical YouTubers and fraudsters aside)
Developed by a young, Jewish, fighting-sport champion, son of a police chief, specifically to help defend his neighbourhood from anti-Semitic youth raids around WW2, Krav Maga (and it’s military variant Kapap) emphasises the use of extreme violence against your opponents’ soft spots to neutralise them as quickly as possible. As a modern self-defence system, it’s incorporated a lot of psychology around understanding and avoiding violence, and about subduing instead of crippling or killing, but it hasn’t changed it’s core principle of 0 to 100.
Israel’s been wounded by an opponent it had stopped taking very seriously. Barring political intervention at the top, they’ll respond with violence so extreme that it sends a message to everyone else.

Possibly posted earlier, here’s the Home Sec’s letter to police:
I have also been absolutely clear that online offending is as serious as offline offending. You will be aware that we have robust legislation in place to deal with terrorist content online, as well as threatening and abusive behaviour or behaviour which is intended or likely to stir up hatred. I urge you to ensure that this continues to be taken into consideration in the upcoming days and that any reports of online offending are dealt with promptly.
I expect online referral units to respond swiftly to any content that breaks the law. In particular, I expect the CT Internet Referral Unit to monitor the situation and respond quickly to any online content that breaches the thresholds for terrorism legislation (TACT), working with tech companies to ensure its removal. I similarly expect the Online Hate Crime Hub to respond to any reports of online content that contravenes hate crime legislation to ensure the perpetrators can be brought to justice.
Obviously there’s a difference between discussion here and the bile associated with the chan forums.

Not sure how to phrase this. There’s relatively reliable reports coming out of unspeakably evil acts committed by Hamas.
In case anyone finds a reminder useful, there’s zero need for you personally to follow this conflict. If you’re in a vulnerable or difficult place, please take care of yourself, don’t subject your mind to atrocities committed thousands of miles away.
Adding- slaughtering people is unspeakably evil, yes. What I’m referring to is another level entirely.

This video comes to mind. I don’t speak the language they’re shouting in, so I take no responsibility for it.

It’s left a massive power vacuum, and for stability’s sake it’s better that the US fill it and do what they can to avoid a confrontation with Iran, than to have multiple other countries try and get involved. Not that I’m advocating for them to do it, but if it keeps Russia, China, Iran, Turkey, etc from adding powder this magazine, it’s the lesser of two evils.
@lynx Russia is using Iranian drones in Ukraine. It remains to be seen if Hamas used Iranian drones this weekend.
