At the age of 62 I know I'm getting slower. How do I know? Because everybody on a road bike speeds past me. Pre lockdown, I was struggling to keep up with a group at a steady 16-17mph on a flattish ride. I approach a hill, I feel as if I'm on a giant piece of elastic. I'm pleased that I can still ride for 40-50 miles - it just takes me longer than it did 10 years ago. Perhaps I should console myself with the fact that I still can ride the distance. Maybe old and slow is the way to go or mabe a new expensive gravel bike is called for. Afterall, on a towpath, I'm not going to be flat out, I'm just likely to be enjoying the flora and fauna. Does any one on here experience anything similar. Come on! I need reassurance.

I moved to rural South Yorkshire about 4 years ago. I'm from here originally and often wanted to return. I did spend 30 years in London. It's quiet here and most people are decent enough. I like the fact that within 5 minutes I'm in lovely countryside. Roads are quiet and cafes/pubs welcoming(pre covid!).
If I need an urban fix Sheffield/Leeds are not too far away.
I like it here. -

I really enjoy this thread. Some of the bikes posted are fantastic machines
(also prohibitively expensive). I suppose if you live in a small flat one 'gravel' bike could meet all your requirements.
However, I don't think I would buy one because when I ride on a towpath or sustrans route, I like to take it slowly and enjoy the experience. I don't need or want performance. Perhaps I should hang a load of weird looking bags on my old Claud Butler Dalesman and tell everyone it's a gravel bike. -

Surly geometry is weird so I suggest you check Surly's website. This has been my go to bike for several years. It it is very decent condition overall. The frame and forks are true and there are no dings, dongs or dents. It's been a commuter, tourer and winter bike as well as grocery hauler. A very versatile workhorse it has been too. The bike really hasn't been used much in the last 5 years as I've been living in Yorkshire. I'm going to make my move up here permanent so unfortunately this bike needs to go to a good home.
The particulars of the build are as follows:
System Ex hubs laced to 36 hole Exal LX17 rims (handbuilt by Spa Cycles)
19 Tooth fixed cog and a 19 tooth Shimano freewheel (pricey and never used)
Sronglight 170mm cranks and matching stronglight bottom bracket (still smooth) with a 48T ring with a 1/8th Chain
10cms Pro lT stem and 3T Morphe bars 42cms end to end. Plenty of spacers to play around with. I use lots to obviate backache when riding fixed.
Deda seatpost sporting a WTB saddle
Tiagra long drop brakes with Tektro levers.
Shimano double sided mtb clipless pedals
32 mm Vittoria tyres (plenty of life left)
Rack
SKS clip on guards
I've had the bike for several years and there are some minor points that I ought to mention to you.
You'll need a new chain
You may need to re-rim the back wheel as there is some slight up and down movement. This is still usable and is a minor source of irritation really. This is not hugely expensive to counter and both hubs are still very smooth.
You'll probably need new brake blocks
I don't want to split the bike. I really need to create more space in the garage. Far too much bike related stuff.
I'm not exactly sure what to ask for the bike price wise. I do know that Steamroller frames are quite pricey at the moment. AS this is a community of generally helpful enthusiasts, I invite suggestions from the forum. I hope to be guided by your good selves.
I'm a frequent visitor to London and If I'm in the smoke I'm happy to meet at tube
mainline train station in west London. I live on the far frontier of the Piccadilly line. Or better still call at the house and have a cup of tea. I do have other items I'm also happy to dispose of.
Please Pm me if you have any questions and I'll try to answer as quickly and as accurately as possible.
I think realistically I'm looking at a figure of circa £375.
If I've overpriced please let me know.
