Damn you are not helping me with my itch. :).
Somehow I was hoping to say that your clearance is larger, but looks as in the same range as my bike.
So, tourmenting continues. Took it today at a bit off-road. 2 things are missing: larger tires & a larger handlebar so I could get more leverage with the inline breaks.
Thanks for the reply.

@Technics100
Great work on CDF. I like the way it looks.Noticed the difference of the rear fork shape between the 2014 and 2016 models. As the 650bx47 wheels are bugging me like crazy, could you tell me what is the space between your chainstays -where the tire is biggest-please?
The WTB Ventures are more appealing to me than the Resolute and because of the 50mm spacing between the hourglass shaped chainstay I hesitate a lot with the purchace of a 650b wheel set.
-
Should be 2 on the driveside, one on the nds for 68mm shell
If I do it this way the chain line won't allow me to use the Tiagra derailleur, in particular won't manage to shift on the larger chainring.
I guess I would keep as it is, as long everything works.
You are right about the spacers use, as it is according to the manual. At a quick look the MTB cups are narrower than the road ones, or at leas the XT compared to RS500.
By the way did anyone tried to use an MTB crank(40/24) with road derailleur?
-
@M_V Thanks. Opted for a XT BB. However I have only installed 1 spacer on on each side. Took it for a test and shifting is ok. Noticed that the non drive side pedal seems a bit closer to the chainstay but the spindle(non brand) is covered fully. I consider installying a 2nd 2.5mm spacer on that side.
Regarding the BBRS500, the incomaptibility is just because there is not enough thread on it to accomodate the spacers?
In another note I have used the Tiagra 4700 front derailleur and STI shifters with 40/24 crank. Shifting is more than reasonable.

I have a Shimano 68mm BB and replacing the crank set with one that fits a 73mm BB.
Can I use 2x2.5mm spacers with the current BB to acomodate the crank set?
Just thinkng about it now I realise it might be a problem as the plastic tube wont reach the cups.
In this case anyone in Bristol would have 2 spacers and a 73mm plastic tube available for collection please?

I think my point is I would like a mid range as it would give me a good balance between quality and price. With a low end I would be a bit worried of not getting me home while the boutique ones might be too expensive.
About hoarding I guss is a good point.
@MTB-Idle. Point taken. English not quite my 1st language.

Initially when I noticed them for the 1st time a few years back I thought that might be something to do with getting high.
You might be right, but I ussually see them on the road as some one stoped and mended on the spot. Not a forensinc but seem they were dropped from a low height as they are not widely scattered(too much explanation).
I would guess if it were kids fooling around they would be a bit more secluded I guess. Also encounterd them on lanes too.

Didn,t know too much about boost untill today. That will be pretty crazy together with Trasher's thought. :)
I use my bike more for adverture/comute/touring. Not into racing or trying to beat my times, but more of exploring and discovering the surounding and seeing new stuff off the beatten path.
@Pifko 130mm QRs are easily available for you at a decent quality? Meaning to be able to deal with the odd pothole or curb with out damaging it completly?

The other day I was looking for some new spares at decent prices, mid range. In general at shimano hubs.
The research got me a bit thinking, as it seemed that it becomes more difficult to find hubs with QR/6 bolt disks to fit the 100/135mm standards. Looking at through axels I struggled to find decent hubs to fit in those dimensions to use them with adaptors. This made me wonder if a perfectly good, 4 years old, steel frame, for which you take care, might be obsolete in a year time because of that?Personally I am not a fan of 2nd hand stuff when it come to wear prone moving parts and I am a bit worried due of the aspect highlighted above.
What is your take on this? Are you stocking on parts to run your bikes for as long as possible?

Hi Technics,
On what CdF model you managed to mouns the 650bx47? What kind of clearing do you get?
I have mesured my CdF 20 2016 XL at the narrowest area between the chain stays(about where the tire would fit) and it only has 50mm. Was a bit disapointed as I was after the WTB 47s also. I am not sure how much improvement would be from a 700x35 to a 650x44 in terms of comfort on rougher routes and I am hesitaying about them. -
Thanks!
As for the shifters. The front one should be 3x7 to work with the 100GS crank set or a 3x10 would work too.(i.e: deore m610)?

Hello everyone,
I followed this place for quite some time since, some good week ago, I got the idea of adding a 2nd set of wheels for my Croix de Fer 20 2016.
As I got to the conclusion that I cannot properly fit a 650b x 47 WTB tire to take the bike on tours slightly off-road I found my self a project.
I have a FreeSpirit FS26STi steel frame and got the idea to make this bike as kind of my off-road bike to see if I like it or not. Researching about it I could not find much about it and as much as I understood FreeSpirits where some cheap bikes at their time.
So I like the frame 1st of all. I also liked to use most of its components Shimano 100GS until I discovered that the front shifter is not working. The wheel are really battered so I will have to rebuild those, but to my surprise I discovered that the rear one is free-hub 7 speed.
As the lowest speed ratio is 1:1(28t-28t) this free-hub opened new opportunities. But about that a bit later, depending on the answer to my question.
I have the old rear hub of the CdF and thinking to convert the bike to 10 speed(implying to buy the appropriate shifters). The new hub fits reasonably well in the frame(this tested without the wheel). Actualy I just have to push it slightly as I think the axel of the 10 speed hub is maxim 5mm larger.
I also plan to use the 100gs rear derailleur as the project has to be very cheap and I will rebuild the wheels(at east I will try) with the better shaped rims from other bikes.
My question is this: Is there anything that I am missing? Would the 10 speed cogs work with the 7 speed Shimano 100GS derailleur?(hand pushing the derailleur it seems that it reaches the furthest part of the free hub). Is there anything that I might need to be aware of?
Forgive the long text!
Don't have much doubt on comfort increase.
Took the plundge. Ordered the parts. I'll report in about 2 weeks after the wheels will be built. In the worst case scenario I will be left with a pair of wheels in expectation of another frame.
Fingers crossed!
