What's the best amount of clearance between the tyre and mudguard, I've just got some cheap Blackburn Cloudburst guards from SJS for the family shopper. Going by the curve and the front brake mount bracket they are designed to be about 30 mm apart which seems wrong.

I have never, even as a courier, used mudguards before.

You can check the age of a tyre from its (US) DOT code a string of numbers and letters on the sidewall the last 4 of which look different to the rest , they are the week and year of manufacture.

if you only have 3 or one is a triangle the tyre is very old.

The family scruffy leave it anywhere load carrier “The Family Tank” has to be changed after (justified) complaints about its handling.
