I got this Dawes step-through the other day and am going to build it for my partner. I gotta say I/she was a bit smitten with the colour and the tubing and forgot to ask sensible Qs like, what size are the wheels? so that was silly and is TBC. It does have forks, but see below.
I'm more of a retro MTB guy and so your help with this is needed. I have lots of parts I'm hoping to use to keep the cost down, such as cranks, cassette, chain, shifters, BB.
Rough plan, with your permission, is:
- black wheels, silver finishing kit
- 1x or 2x 8 retro mtb drivetrain, incl xt thumbies.
- swept back bars, flat bar levers
- 700c wheels, which I'm hoping will fit with standard drop road callipers - will check this tonight.
Some obscurities:
- JIS headset (glad I checked!)
- 80mm front wheel spacing?!?! Not even Sheldon Brown lists this spacing. I'd be worried the forks were squished, if it weren't for the fact the frame was hand delivered and the guy said they'd just stripped it, plus it reads 80.00mm on the digital callipers.
So on the forks thing, I guess these are my options:
- coldset forks - a whole 20mm, don't massively trust myself to do this. I've asked Argos for a quote as I live near them.
- build a new wheel with £17 80mm hub from bankrupt, yes they do exist.
- new forks?
What would you do?

I'm starting to build a Dawes Lady Galaxy with what I have, plus more. Most of what I have got is retro mtb stuff, so I'm thinking I will use a retro mtb 8speed drivetrain as I pretty much have that, bar a rear mech.
I've basically sold most of what I need on here over the last couple years which is a bit silly but I imagine that's the same for lots of us here! I'm in Bristol so it will need posting, or collection here.
On my list:
- swept back alloy bars in silver. no steel please, trying to keep this a relatively light build
- pedals
- comfy saddle
- a silver 27.0 seatpost (I think this is sorted)
- retro mtb rear mech, ideally XT m739
- Tektro long drop brakes r559
- flat bar cantilever / short-pull brake levers
not on my list any more:
- Short 1" quill stem, silver, c. 60-80mm
- 1" JIS headset
- 700c wheelset. All silver. 8 speed cassette compatible i.e. 130mm spacing on rear.
Probably more later as the project evolves.

If anyone fancies saving this stuff from the bin it’s all yours. Could be the start of a wee project. No splitting, you need to take it all. Collect E8 evenings or W1T/Euston daytime.
There’s:
A zoom 1 1/8th quill stem
A long 26.8 Kalloy seat post
A nice Minoura steel bottle cage
A stronglight bottom bracket
Shimano deore MT60 170mm cranks. The nds has a little crack in it so not much life left in them but I was using them fine and only noticed the crack when I swapped them out for different cranks.Cheers for looking
