I'm not a structural engineer but wouldn't the cost/simplicity of removing the chimney breast above the relevant room be similar or less (in cost, more simplicity...) than getting a steel in below to support it? Seeing as there's zero point in having a dud chimney breast taking up space. I know you said you don't need the space back upstairs, but then it's just done anyway.

I think you are in Bristol...? We are and have just had a similar quote to @dbr for replacing the incoming main from street to the house. Which would only be about a third of the work required, as it doesn't include anything internal, or making good/relaying garden path etc. So we're definitely going to continue shouting 'I'm in the shower, don't turn the tap on!'

This is just pulled from Google images but I think most window suppliers should be able to offer it. If it's going in a new wall or a dormer then either the window can be sized to fit the opening (expensive?!) or the opening can be prepared to fit a standard sized window. But I think lots are made to order at not extortionate prices now.
