Isn't this what all shops do, except in this case LBSes can get cheaper stock from Wiggle than they can from the distributor?
Anyhow, yes, a lot of cyclists are quite tight - whether that's because of its origins as a working-class recreation, certainly trad cycling culture inculcated self-reliance as a virtue, and a certain degree of thrift comes along with that. If a lot of the market has been buoyed up by the whole New Golf/BC Success Machine that is now receding, then surviving on the hard core of cyclists that do most of their own maintenance and buy mainly consumables (perhaps a new bike every decade) is going to be a problem.

Just idly wondering, really! St Jan always claims that e.g. Honjo guards are lighter than Chromoplastics, partly because the stays are lighter, but the aluminium Brompton guards I've seen mostly reuse the stock stays - Ti ones would help, I guess! At 6'5" and over 15 stone, weight-weenieism is always going to be the most marginal of gains for me...

I wouldn't want to rely on that, mind - cargo bikes were occasionally nicked in Cambridge when I lived there, and I've seen the odd theft report from London's famous London too. Where I think you're probably safer is that a cargo bike's a bit long and heavy to chuck in the back of a van, especially if the back wheel's immobilised with a frame lock. I use a BFO chain and the frame lock, which has worked so far.
