Currently reading Peter Cossins' book about the first TdF; some interesting untangling of the various legends of the early Tour.
That ^^ book about early women racers looks interesting; isn't Rapha also meant to be publishing something about women racers soon (Queens of Pain - think it's going to be a coffee table book)?

Touch it to your lips when it's been off your wrist for a while/tap it against your teeth? Glass will feel colder and harder than acrylic (though with an issue watch like that it's 99% likely to be acrylic). OTOH if you're going to get it serviced I'd imagine they'll buff up the crystal as part of that; I'd ask them not to polish the case though, as the wear is part of the watch's history.

Very cool - is it an acrylic crystal? If so, there's a polishing compound called polywatch that would buff out scratches, though in a pinch toothpaste works! Otherwise I'd leave it; you might want to get the movement serviced as the lubricants have possibly dried out, but other than the new strap that's perfect.

The stubby hour hand is taken from the original MoD pilot watch spec, and is possibly a matter of taste - I love it. The bracelet and end links are great, and the whole thing is really well made; from people that have owned both, the Speedbird is about 90-95% as good as an IWC flieger, but at 10% of the cost.
The GMT is a bit busy for my tastes, which is why I didn't buy one, but I don't think it's terrible.
^ such a good build.
