Some people do both, I wish I could.
The Etape is pure fantasy cycling. It also gives you a true measure of what the pros are all about compared to oneself.
Also the allure of closed Alpine roads, climbing and descending with no poxy vehicles to give you the willies.
It's just a fun weekend with thousands of like minded cyclists from all over.
However I would like do the Maratona of the Dolomites if possible the year after next.

I guess after seeing 2016's profile with the 4 mountains and then seeing 2017's with just the 2 peaks one could be forgiven for thinking that it would be easier however I think that isn't going to be the case at all.
My main concern will be the weather, hopefully it will be cool and overcast but not raining. If on the other hand we have unfettered Alpine sunshine in July then it may become a very grueling ride indeed.
I'm going with a tour company and when I booked which was on the night of the announcement all the Briancon rooms were sold out I think I may have been lucky to get the last room share that they had.
I like this recce video, less music and more explaining https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hBBVl8nUyU

My Powertap Joule GPS has been slowly dying all year, I emailed them about whether the battery was replaceable and was basically told no, buy a new one.
So I did...A Garmin 520 even though I didn't really want to go back to them.
I don't like the fact that Garmin's software is online I much preferred Powertap's standalone desktop application to analyze my efforts.
I did notice the Wahoo in a cabinet whilst I was in the Hampton Court store...but dismissed it in my mind as perhaps not a serious computer, something akin to a Cateye or something.
Maybe I should have given it a closer look.

Pity about them shying away from steel, the modern stuff is so good if only people knew.
I think Colnago are missing a trick there.
80 missing Tecnos (Tecnii ?). I want to replace the chainstays on my Tecnos which a northern framesman has quoted me £170 to do. Thing is I may never see another one in my size anytime soon (60x58).
Still pondering it, do you have experience of repaired Colnagos?

Saarf,
I don't supposed you asked Ernesto if they have any plans to re-introduce steel frames again did you?
I don't mean the heritage Master that they do either but proper modern Columbus Spirit fat tubed contemporary framesets.
As a half decent grand fondo rider I baulked at the idea of dropping 2-3 grand on plastic which is why I got Stelbel in Italy to build me a Spirit steel Rodano for last season's Etape.
I just wished Colnago had that option like Merckx, Bataglin, De Rosa etc... have.
BTW I have two Masters and a Tecnos so I know how they ride.

How is the threadless fork conversion?
A few weeks back I was trying to communicate with some of the northern framesmen about that very same issue (replace steerer tube) but then gave up because I couldn't get a straight answer if I could get a reply at all from some of them.
Is Winston the kind of chap that you can just rock up to and discuss things with?
