Yeah its all a spectrum of sensitivity I think. There are people I know who I think have a problem and they don't see it. Then for me I didnt have a real problem but was far too sensitive to it.
What is really critical here for me is that if you are under 30 then you likely wont know any different and that makes it all the more important question it but also less likely to question it.

For me I never saw my self as an overuser it was more the obtrusiveness of it and never being happy with how much it forced its way into my activities even with restrictions listed above about notifications, uninstalling etc.
As a man with many hobbies and interests I never had an issue with finding other things to do I am very much one of those people who dont have enough hours in the day. What I really gain from not using the phone is the downtime around those activities. Lunch breaks, queues in shops, loo stops, doctors waiting rooms, tired evenings on the sofa. Previously the algorithm was competing to take that time now its present.
I took my kid to the park earlier and was surrounded by parents scrolling/working/calling/tweeting. Those moments playing with your child are the most rewarding and if that doesn't encourage people to question what they are doing with the phones then I think there is a larger issue.
I don't think most people need to give them up. I just don't use one because I simply don't miss it. I would say to anyone reading this that if the thought of exclusively using a basic nokia for 1 week seems impossible then you need to try it.

Whatsapp is a weird one because it was probably the most useful app I had and and the one I miss the most.... but also the one that broke the camels back. Because my work use Whatsapp in lieu of real management it means that your personal phone gets hijacked.
I do miss firing pictures and videos to friends easily but I am really glad that because my phone takes terrible photos I use my proper camera more and most importantly take all the photos off and upload to my computer/print - The phone just used to hoard 1000s of random pics.
Atleast now if I send a pic to friends/family, I have used my camera. Thought about the pic. Uploaded to pc. tweaked in lightroom. Saved and named in a future friendly format. Attached to email. Sent. Then called/texted to accompany. Anything shite fails by step 3 so I am happy that im sending quality. Plus not getting dick reveal memes and russian bot hooker phishing cons is a bonus.

Yeah totally agree with that. I do work in a customer facing job so as a result hear all that stuff word of mouth. I also really enjoy hearing all the different perspectives of the same stories too.
If you see enough people on a daily basis you always have an engrained long range weather forecast which is helpful.
Most (mine definitely) local news websites are too offensively AD covered for me to engage anyway.

I used my usual methond and trawled the net for some consensus and reviews and threw the tops at LFGSS, Those other tyres didn't really come up in the top lists but saw Panaracers get a few less than favourable words said.
Ha well im not sure I do need them lol. I use my S-ones mostly in the city but in that there is also a lot of canals and light gravel paths. Now I live slightly further out there is the option of a river instead of canal which is grass, trodden soil/mud path and gravel/fire roads. I used to have 35mm Sammy slicks and do like the comfort on the rougher stuff. So I thought 40mm knobbles for exploring and 30mm slicks for fun.

Just to add to this as well my full set up is.
Shit phone carry every day texts and calls only.
Ancient macbook does all my admin, browsing and emails, Always at home.
Because of increased book reading I went higher spec and went for a Kindle and love it.
Camera I already had a sweet fujifilm that wasn't used as much due to phone camera. now is my main camera.
Maps - someone elses or car satnav
No social medias what so ever EXCEPT I watch youtube instead of TV. Its one I haven't yet felt the need to kick but is always up for review.

I have been off them for 3 years.
I went straight from rooted android phone with loads of mods set up by my self (serious geek phone). To basic Nokia with no app store, no whatsapp, no social media, no internet. Other than calls and texts its a useless piece of plastic.
It made the single biggest improvement to my life in the shortest and easiest step of anything. I quit mostly because of scrolling with no intent, and whatsapp - I was getting hammered with messages from multiple work groups at all hours and while most of the messages weren't for me It was switching my brain into work mode. I made the transition and gave the other phone away immediately so it was a one way street.
Was a challenge for a few days because you will realise that boredom is a thing that you have been avoiding for years. After that first week though you will realise that boredom is a super power and there are so many untapped minutes and hours in the day that get wasted.
Everyone else I see on a daily basis cant sit by themselves for 30 seconds without looking at their phone. Now I look for things with my eyes to entertain me. 'Look a bird' 'Wow that bar holding that wall up is really big, how did they move that' 'What was that guys name from that band' Really simple and trivial stuff but previously ignored. That last one about 'who/what/when/where was that thing?' would be solved on a phone in 5 seconds. For me, I could stimulate my spare passing thoughts for 5 hours inbetweens jobs with that, and that buzz when you get it! Off your own back. Not from google. Its underrated.
Since I quit I have started reading books (previously not read a full book since school) Now I will read every single day and take a book with me anywhere I go and might get the opportunity.
I never hear from work unless I am there.
I never get the fear of missing out because If I need to know something I have always found out anway.
I am truly engaged in all my relationships there are no distractions when face to face and no online dramas.
One of the most powerful things I have got from it is I have completely stopped reading the news and anyone reading this even if not tempted to give up your smartphones, please try giving up the news. For the most part its poison and as above EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW WILL FIND YOU.
I haven't read any corona articles this whole time, not watched one press release and not spent one sleepless night thinking my breathing isn't quite right and that it might have got me however I still got all the info from day to day interactions and a bit of radio that you need to stay in. Not see your mum, pubs closed etc etc.It is 100% worth a go, its not for everyone and you have to find your own balance. What I would recommend is strip it all back for 1 week with a basic ring ring phone see what you cant live without. I personally would have struggled with a halfway house and would have creeped a few bad habits in.
In the end I did change phone after the first year and have settled with a nokia E72
https://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_e72-2831.php
Primarily for a qwerty keyboard as I do prefer to text than call. It also has an offline map so no data package but I have never needed it. There is ALWAYS someone with a smartphone who will help you out when you are desperate. It felt like I just threw some ramblings at a keyboard here so if it doesn't make sense let me know.

The nano looks a little fast looking tread wise for what I am after. Seen as I already have a nearly slick I was hoping to go to the other extreme and have a mini MTB tyre to give me maximum coverage in terms of terrain.
I do like the look of the resolute and is very much what I have in my head. Just worried that being a 42c how tight I might start getting in the frame and clearance for mud.
Do these WTBs stand up well to Schwalbe?
@jackbepablo How do you rate the ultrabites other than narrow? and were they performance or evo models?
-
I am planning on picking up a second set of tyres so I can go and see if the Midlands has any gravel. Currently I have got Schwalbe S-one 30 set up tubeless on stans grail rims and absolutely love them.
Been exclusively riding Schwalbe tyres for years and now looking for a knobbly 40c tyre the logical choice was G-one ultrabite, however I do feel like I have to scratch that tan wall instagram itch and they only do them in the performance range and not the evolution.
So few questions for you guys,
Is Schwalbe evolution loads better than performance?
Would something like a WTB Raddler be a better option as my first non-schwalbe tyre?
Is there a forum favourite 40c tubeless knobbly?
Will report back with updates on my local gravel situation.

Ive had cheapy ones and they are terrible. We also get through one every 6 months at the office. I figure I have already condemned too may kettles to a 10,000 year landfill decomposition. I cant bring my self to continue doing it. Hence my thought of intergenerational cast iron.
Not had any of the drippy issues with mine and in its defence it 3 years old and not dead yet so probably my best kettle so far.

Im a yeast man so dont have any experience with this but I have seen a few websites mention having a starter 'back up'.
Which involves drying out some discard on parchment paper for a few days so you can clone your starter should something bad happen to it. Might be worth a go, just dont put the dry white powder in your hand luggage for the flight.

I went for the biggest one of these https://pizzasteel.com/
Mainly because of the size and intended mostly for bread. So its to use in the oven rather than the hob. I havent used it though because I time restrict eat while I am at work and this turned up after my cheat days :( .
Gave it a couple coats of seasoning in preparation though and it gets bloody hot and for a very long time so looking forward to it.

I am pretty heavy handed with mine and certainly to look at looks fine. It was also already in the house when I bought it so had previous uses. Definitely no issues in performance as the heat is pretty nuts. I made the switch away from teflon non stick because I have killed 2 pans on it by overheating and delaminated the coating. I do usually cook hot and fast though.
I now use a lodge bare cast iron as my everyday frying pan and also get good pizza out of it. However I have just had a pizza steel turn up so I am looking forward to giving that a blast.

I would recommend using an overdraft as much as I would recommend reading the daily mail.
But in all seriousness I have a text message alert that my banks sends when you reach an amount of your choice.
Re the toilet situation, this topic is worth its own thread but if you are following the advise from all good proctologists and using a squat stool then there is very little time for scrolling.
