Quick update on the Rollei 35AF.
Unfortunately, I have to say the user experience is really bad so I boxed it up this morning and it's already on its way back.
According to reviews the image quality is really good and I don't doubt it but using it was quite a rubbish experience for me tbh.
It feels like using a toy rather than a real camera but my main beef is this:
The shutter release is supposed to stay down after a shot and only pops up again when you advance the film. The shutter button on mine popped up all the time on its own though. When the button is up you can't advance the film. So the only way around I could find was an intentional but unwanted double exposure on the current frame...
All this double exposure business and sometimes counting a half-press to focus as a shot also meant that the digital only frame counter was completely off. I don't think I finished my roll but when I was too annoyed by all of this the counter was at 39 on a 36 exposures film.
Really sad about this. I wanted this to be good so badly. I love my old Rollei 35 and hoped for this to be similar but it's very different. -

What comes to mind immediately would be:
- Whisky Scully 23deg
- Sim Works Get Around 24deg
- Sim Works Little Nick 15deg
- Whisky Scully 23deg

A quick update on another front. As mentioned upstream the inbred is getting new wheels with a dynamo hub. Jorrit/munrowheels finished them a few days ago and they are on their way. A sneak peek here.
This means the @Hulsroy Rinko AWOL now fully inherits the previous Arkane wheels.
That, plus a WI crankset, snatched on a sale, now finally makes it a full bike with no shared parts. While on it I also fiddled with the cockpit. The setback seatpost put my weight too far back while the very straight bars were hurting my wrists.
So no setback, more backsweep and longer stem.
All rounded up with a little rack as bag support. I had my first outing with this setup on Sunday and it’s fun and comfortable but very upright. So I might switch the bars for some with zero rise at some point in the future. For now I am off to Dresden to check out Bespoked ✌️ -
Oh yes! Excited to see where this goes!
Agree with @Tijmen on the bluebell alpenglow combo. -

@oheyitsd thanks!
Haha well that’s how you get light bikes, counting all the grams ;)
The bike isn’t done. The aim is to go below 9kg but for now I just wanted to make it work so I can try it before dropping more cash on it.
I agree on the chainring. Only doing it for the chainline. I am using these tabs on the outside for a cleaner look.@vthejk mid next week for a few days for work ✌️
@Browndonneur ah cheers! Pedals are definitely a big question mark still. I think in the end I want spds. There a bunch really light ones but from reviews they are all always only partly shimano spd compatible…

Yeah, from what I can tell from the reviews the results are very nice. For me, a camera also has to feel and sound nice though. The original Rollei 35 has a very satisfying mechanical feel and sound to it. It's one of the reasons I have such a soft spot for it and why I jumped on the preorder of this remake. I'll report back once I've used it some more.
I also have a backlog of 4 old cameras I am currently cleaning and repairing. I was thinking of documenting some of it in a (non-bike) Current Projects thread. Would people be interested in reading that?

My Rollei 35AF was just delivered. First impression after taking it out of the box is that it feels a bit cheap because it is very light.
The original is smaller but heavier. Feels more solid.
I might be able to take it out on the weekend and play a bit with it. I've considered getting a double tripod mount and doing a side-by-side comparison of old and new. For "science". -
The main issue is the brakes. Lightweight brake levers compressible housing and flex in the ti frame make for a really mushy feel.
Since then, I have replaced the housing with compressionless Jagwire housing but haven't gotten around to trying it yet. Already feels way better.
If this isn't enough of an improvement I also have these VO brake levers to try. A few grams heavier but seem way less flimsy -

Thanks for all the input, everyone!
@RonnieOatmilk & @MisterMikkel: I will need to find a balance between weight and chonkyness. Need to my research on numbers.
@vthejk Thank you! Yes, flaps are good and working! Had some rain now to test them. Do you need some flap material? I'll be in the UK soon and could post a snippet.
@JanWillem Too kind. I am excited about where this goes. First time on a Ti frame for me.
Thanks @Eeyorecore for the bb input. I am wondering if I should go with a half link chain if I am going down that route. However, a half link chain is most likely heavier than some nice 9 or 10 speed chain.

On a recent photo walk, I found an open door to a "new event venue" and sneaked some photos. Despite what you see in the photos it was a very cloudy day. I waited quite some time for every shot to catch that little bit of sunshine between the clouds.

Also, don't forget ebay and paypal fees etc. The selling price on ebay is not what you get in your pocket in the end.
