I think this sort of thing isn't just people not checking just before manoeuvring. I would guess that these are people who don't really do much checking of mirrors/general making sure you're aware of what's going on around you. When I check my mirrors to turn, its to make sure nothing has popped up since I last checked them. Not to, for the first time, see what's going on around me.

Brick will presumably outlast wooden construction, but I reckon it's a bit overkill for something like this. I work in mine all year round and it's super toasty in the winter (an hour of an electric heater in the morning is enough when it's cold). I used double glazed patio doors, which are pretty secure, and you'd have a job getting through the 10cm+ of various building materials that comprise the walls.

+1 for Charge Spoon. Comfy, cheap and looks ok. I've got a cambium and a ritchey classic and my charge knocks the spots off both in terms of comfort.

Some guy thought overtaking (coming towards me) on a narrow, blind corner of the cycle path was a good idea last night. I struggled to agree with him as a flew off my bike into a patch of stinging nettles. lots of loud swearing ensued, but only superficial damage to knees, hands and bike so I eventually calmed down and we parted amicably.

Then I get home and get the rage again - guy had a child seat (empty) and I often cycle with my 2yo along there. not sure how I would have acted if a child had been involved in that.
