Is it worth paying the little extra for surly or anything like that though?

I'm not wanting to break the bank with the likes of Phil Woods hubs (as much as I would like to), so was wondering what are the best options for a good quality, cheaper flip flop hub? I've got a £15 voucher for Wiggle, and wondered about the Miche Primato large flange hubset that they have for £65. Then I've seen the Forumla, Espresso, Novatec...the list goes on. I don't know much about the quality of these things, and want something relatively decent.

I'm matching it up to a 32h polished ally H+Son Deep section rim, so the hub would preferably be silver in finish too. 120mm hub preferable too (I think!).

I'm not really planning on using the fixed setup on the flip flop initially as I want a single speed, but who knows what I'll do in the future...

Forks were definitely english. Turned out the thread had a little overspray on it which when cleaned up made it a little easier to turn the upper race on. Still tough but once past the first few threads it was much easier. Everything now looks good.

Thanks Ben. Looks like we crossed over! I guess that whilst they could be similar enough they might be too dissimilar in the same way, hence why I can get the lock nut on but not the upper cup?

So it looks like either I'm being stupid or the upper cup won't screw on. The lock nut will screw on just fine! Could the upper cup be faulty? I've tried numerous times and each time it starts to mesh it just locks up completely like the threading is wrong on it.

Should I return it to wiggle and ask for another to be sent out or is it likely to be me? Or is a lot of force required? I mean the lock nut will do on with fingers and spins on and off just fine.

Do I need to persist with getting the threaded parts to mesh then? I don't want to strip the threads having just paid for the frame and forks to be refurbed.

Ok, so I made a rookie error. Looks like the fork has been replaced (?) at some point and I didn't think to check it assuming it was english given it was an 80s holdsworth... It's got a flat filed edge to it which sheldonbrown's website tells me the thread is French. Can anyone make any recommendations based on that?

Shame really as the campy record headset looked lovely out of the box!

I hadn't realised the campag would fit, only looked at the vintage ones and they all seemed too large so I ignored the new ones, which actually have the perfect stack height at 36.5mm. Hopefully it will arrive before xmas along with some cinelli criterium handlebars I've ordered from Denmark!

Thanks for the suggestions and advice re what would suit the age of the bike. My knowledge isn't that good, so that is quite useful to think about.

I'm doing up an 80s Holdsworth frame, and need to find a 1" threaded headset that has a stack height of around 37mm (I only have the frame and forks, no previous headset to go by so give or take a mm?).

I really like the look of the Velo Orange Grand Cru headsets in chrome, as they match the finish I'm going for, but unfortunately their stack height is 42mm. My first question is am I right in assuming I can't use this as it is too tall?

If not, can anyone recommend anything similar that would fit the bill? I'm preferably looking for sealed bearings too. Not fussed about it being actual vintage, but nice 'n shiny, relatively good quality, and preferably no more than the grand cru ones ~£40.

I've seen some a9 strong light ones with a 37mm stack height but the finish doesn't look so great. Not quite the chrome I'm looking for, but maybe I need to compromise?

hmmmmmm, been thinking about it. I've invested a lot of time in it and not sure I want to part with it just yet. However I have been tripping over bikes in my hallway and thinking I need to minimize the number of bikes I have. Let me just think about that some more.
