Evening all

I’m looking to kit out my Specialized Tricross with a front rack with a deck like the Spesh Pizza Rack has. The Tricross is setup with Cantilever brakes so the rack would need a support that fit under the brake cables and above a front mudguard into the crown mount.

What’s something like this likely to cost and are there are builders out there who you would recommend?

After searching for a half decent and reasonably priced steel or aluminium beater bike to use for a bit of everything, I couldn’t find one. So, I resorted to another Spesh Tricross (geared version this time).

I’m proper chuffed with the Singlecross build (pics below), so decided to plough on with this geared version, especially as the Tricross tyre clearance is pretty good.

I found it on Facebook Marketplace, arranged shipping and it arrived a few days later and I’m proper chuffed with it. It was a bargain too, only £275.

Building it up with bits n pieces I’ve accumulated over the last few years and months and it should be pretty sweet, so here goes...

Knocking out the Spesh Mindset headset for a Cane Creek IS Headset (did this in my Singlecross)

Had an old SRAM Apex 1x GXP crankset lying around so ordered a Praxis Works GXP BSA BB for it. Going to put on a band-on chain guide as the rear derailleur isn’t clutched and just want to limit the chance of chain bouncing off on the rough stuff.

Never used one before but trying out a WolfTooth Road Link to go with an old 5700 series 105 Rear Derailleur, and pairing that with an eBay Special, 10 speed 11-40 cassette

Had some old 105 10s shifters going spare, so stuck em on

Nice wide alu flared bars and alu Genesis stem that came off my Fugio and putting ‘em to good use! Along with the aluminium seatpost too.

Bog standard Tiagra chain to pop on too.

I’m going to leave the Cantilever Tektro brakes on
it and the stock wheels, as they just need a bearing service and the rims need truing. The stock tyres are nice and wide and I’ll leave them on for now too. I’d like to go tubeless in the future but to keep costs down, will do that at a later date.

The only bits I’m still hunting for are a good set of front and rear racks and I’m open to suggestions. The front, I’d really like to find something like the Spesh Pizza Rack, but one that works with a cantilever setup. Any suggestions?

The other is a good set of mudguards, I’ve used SKS Bluemels on my Fugio and they’re pretty good for coverage. Should I stick with these?

Can anyone recommend a front rack for a cantilever braked Spesh Tricross please? Looking for something similar size to the Spesh Pizza Rack mount.

If you were picking a hub (120mm) fixed/free what would you go for?

This may be a stupid question so I apologise in advance, can you use a 3/32” chain for a single speed setup with an 1x (usually 11 speed setup) chainring up front? Specifically a Sram Force X-Sync

I've also weighed the F+F and they are surprisingly heavy - frame without any bearings or headset cups etc 1.66kg and fork was 0.87kg. For ref - this was for a 56cm

Update - Cane Creek IS41 headset has now been fitted and feels smooth and sweet. The low stack version looks pretty smart too. I was going to put on a Kalloy Stealth Alu stem but kinda like the Specialized stock with the chrome face plate.

KCNC Ti Seatpost, KCNC green seat post collar and Zipp XPLR bars en-route from r2-bike. Maybe arriving tomorrow.

Received the Sun Tour SunXCD Hub from Velo Duo Cycles and it is really nice. I've realised I'll need a chain tug so ordered up a Surly one which has arrived too.

Just waiting on the Hope front hub (went for a Hope because I could colour match and get it in silver), then can measure it up to choose spokes, then it's time to get building.

Ordered some Muc Off tubeless valves in green, and they're not quite the right shade of green but will go nicely with the KCNC seat collar clamp.

I hope to race. Never done CX before but thought it would be fun on a SS!

What size is your frame?

Update -

Bike has been stripped completely and all of the components have been ordered.

The new Force CX 1 Crankset has been installed and a new smooth Bb. Sets up with a 46mm chainline which should be easy enough to space out on the SunXCD hub.

Thank you for the offer, I’ve already ordered the wheels now. I’ll check out and see if I can axle swap for the SunXCD too. The VeloSolo spacers look pretty cool too.

Thanks @D_Mars, I missed that in the build research, shame as those TRPs look nice. I didn’t realise the RL520 are re-brands Of Cane Creek either.

That’s a relief, I kept those and binned everything else that came out. Frame is stripped down, cleaned and ready for build.

Was that on a Tricross in the end? From what I've found the IS CC 40 needs a 4 mm spacer?

First ever single speed project for me, I guess this build has probably been done many times before but I'd appreciate any help that you can offer!

Picked this up only a couple of days ago after being on the hunt for either a Tricross (135mm spaced), Singlecross or CaadX

Proposed re-build

Already ordered - SRAM Force 1 Crankset (GXP / 42T)

• Sun Tour SunXCD 100/120mm Hubs 32 spoke holes (The rear has a Shimano Freehub for 5 or 6 speed cassettes so I figured to give myself plenty of adjustment for chainline I could use this, space it out and not have to worry too much about what I use up front. These also come with QR skewers, are these OK for use with a single speed? Any slipping?)
  
• DT Swiss RR 511 rims (after some tubeless rim brake to run some Challenge Almanzo / Challenge Gravel Grinders / WTB Byway / WTB Ventures in 40mm if they'll fit)
  
• TRP RRL or Cane Creek V Drop Levers (undecided)
  
• TRP CX 8.4s (looked at getting some RevoX Cantis but didn't want to have to deal with the judder that I've read about)
  
• Either an AbsoluteBlack Single Speed cog or WolfTooth Single Speed Cog
  
• Probably a YBN 11 speed chain (use these for other geared bikes and they've been great)
  
• Kalloy Uno stealth stem on the way from Taiwan
  
  

Still trying to decide on reasonable priced carbon post and bars.

The headset bearings are shot so I'll be diving back through the forums to read the advice about swapping that out for the Cane Creek IS one - can't remember who did it here recently. Hopefully it's fairly simple!

Hey Shl, I have a 56cm 2012 (I believe) Caad 10 in raw aluminium colour, frame and fork and BB and headset bearings in place for sale.
