Most county council publish gritting routes, eg: http://www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/roads-parking-and-rights-of-way/roads/roads-in-severe-weather/winter/ but obviously that's no guarantee there will be no ice. Hope you find a suitable route.

Last time I rode up that way I took the A38 to Hardwicke then B4008/Bristol Road, A4301, St Oswalds Road, Gouda Way, A430/Kingsholm Way and back onto the A38/Tewkesbury Road. A bit main roady south of Gloucester, but OK. Didn't like the A38 N of Glos though, would head out to Hartpury and Ashleworth next time.

As @adroit says Bob makes his own springs (for the scissors and pliers layers only, IIRC). He can also make the side plates and liners in different materials such as ti, brass or copper and in colours and finishes. He also uses hardened stainless steel pins that are much more durable than the standard brass or nickel silver pins. The improved spring action comes from a better fit between the stiffer, larger diameter pins and the tools.
But basically, it's just a pimped swiss army knife. I'd love one but can't justify the price.

Love to see these workshop photos. I miss the tools we had at my old workplace:

Excel lathe and Bridgeport mill - plus various saws, presses and other tools just out of shot. My new place has just one wonky pillar drill. :-(I've got a nice Axminster bench drill and a couple of other bits and pieces, but we're renting at the moment and I've got nowhere to set them up. Moving to a new house soon with a double garage that's going to become my bike fettling space. Eventually I'd like to get a lathe and mill, and hope to build a frame or two in there too.

I don't have GPX records of anything prior to mid-2013 which is a shame. There were plenty of nice long rides on there criss-crossing Wales and the Midlands. I was on 18x18 where I used to live, but the changes to the tolerance on proximity to the squares knocked me back to 11x11. Has taken me 6 months to get up to 12x12 around my new house. I've filled in most of the patch between Bristol, the Cotswold edge and the Severn - now I need to either buy a canoe or get into the hillier bits to the NE.

It's a great ride. The overnight bit back from Bangor along the A5 is ace.

Stuffed my bike (the nice one, not my usual commuter) into the verge on the way into work this morning. Lost the front wheel on a wet corner and slid across the lane on my hip and calf. Didn't think it was wise to ride the rest of the way in - another 12 miles - so rode slowly home. Not too badly hurt but have got a stiff leg now and am unlikely to be able to ride this weekend - was planning on riding a 200k audax tomorrow.

I love the arcane stuff that gets dragged up when buying a house: the latest is Chancel repairs. Whilst doing the searches our solicitor has identified that we might be liable for repairs on the parish church because it (the church, not the house - that's from 1700-and-something) was built before 1536. £100 to check the National Archives to see if we could be liable, or £20 for an indemnity.

It used to be a lot more complicated - you'd get more points/metre climb on longer events (I think...) http://www.aukweb.net/results/aaa/aaaarch/#p7 if you're interested. The system changed for the 2009 season to 1 point/1000m climb with minimum limits (eg 1500m for 100km) depending on distance.
