That must have taken some nerve. Was there anything else on your handlebars? Like, say, a bag? I know a lot of people suggest having a bag dangling from your handlebars is a bad idea and might even affect your ability to steer or use your brakes but of course that's just an old wives' tale.

An advisory cycle lane is just that, the driver may not be the world's greatest but you can imagine the cyclist being called out on the 'bad cyclists' thread for desperately trying to get to the front when there wasn't space.
Taking your bag off the bike and calmly walking away doesn't look like how you would behave if you were terrified. More like if the first word out of your mouth had been 'sorry' and you didn't fancy facing up to the consequences of your own shit cycling.
