I’m really in two minds!! Keep rustic and worn as it is and throw it together with bits I’ve got lying around to use it as a winter smasher for the inevitable future / OR a commuter (yelp) - or try to laboriously remove the old lacquer only (unsure how to do just that on its own) and give a fresh polish and fresh coat of lacquer so it looks a bit more respectible. A respray / full restoration is off the cards though. I just haven’t got the money or time for it and I don’t want to end up with something I’ll be scared of leaning against anything. I’ve already got a bike for that haha.
To be honest I’m open to suggestions on what to do with the paint. (Although I’m not keen on doing a home spray job with rattle cans - don’t think I’ve ever seen a home spray job actually look good) but I could be convinced otherwise

I know it has taken a while and I’ve hardly even touched the frame yet! I just had to make sure I did it properly after removing @Carabo ‘s paint splatter finish ;)

Haha thanks! Yeah so started off originally with the paint stripper. Moved onto sanding off the last bits of primer, and then picking out the hard to reach bits from the carbon weave. Then started polishing up the fork crown from 800 grit to 3000 🤯 and after that hit it with the metal polish. A couple hours work on the crown in total.
Carbon was cleaned up properly from dust etc and given a go with 3 coats of lacquer, polishing back each time. Still have to do the final polish but I’m happy with where it’s at! I’d say it’s nearing 7 hours of work (excluding drying and stripper time) and about £25 spent on materials

"X years of building" and "master frame builder" in itself doesn't really mean much to me as long as no one is able to name an actual advantage one gets from that
Well I guess that point alone is the debate. I know personally I’d rather be riding a lovingly hand made custom frame (with a lifetime warranty and excellent after sales care) than another offering such as a Taiwanese factory made S works or the like...
You might not feel the difference between an aluminium Pre Cursa or a £2k Look on the track but you’ll ride it knowing the attention to detail and R&D and all sorts that have gone into the frame and that’s what you’ll appreciate? I don’t know. I just think that £5200 for a custom made Dura Ace di2 Corima wheel specced bike in immaculate condition seems reasonable to me. (Not to mentionthe EE calipers and the Enve finishing kit)

All you’ve got to do is check out the Baum site to see why they charge so much and why they are valued as “special” compared to other frames such as Donohue (which I am not taking away from one bit). 29 years of building including mentoring from a master frame builder across all sorts of materials (which obvs require special skill sets to work with). Just to start with there are only a few companies out there that can offer that kind of bespoke finish that people are looking for. For reference a Cinelli Xcr is £3270. You can have a made to order custom Baum frame for around £500 more...

Hey everyone,
My friend has recently had his modern road bike stolen so is looking to get something else ASAP. I’ve convinced him that we will find something reasonable with a budget of £300 (max max £350) so looking for something steel in a 55-57cm. Reynolds, Columbus or the like. Shimano or Campy as long as it has working brifters. A good Concorde (along those lines) would be perfect.
