Nope, road sets shouldn't need any spacers. I currently run a mtb crankset in a road bb and it fits perfectly without spacers.

I believe the Shimano Alfine is €65 at Rose, it comes with a BB so that should leave plenty for a cog and chain.

I'd just see what kind of ratio you normally run and go up a couple teeth in the back to compensate for off-road use.

I had the same issue with shimano mountainbike cranks, hitting it with a mallet killed my bearings so I wouldn't do that.

Had no problems with the same cranks on a new bottom bracket.
