Hi all,
A forthcoming house move has forced me to to clear out all my less frequently used bikes/parts so to make the job easier and help towards all the costs. I've already sold another (Bob Jackson) tourer but now the MacLean also sadly has to go before the purge can end. It's a MacLean tourer which I believe is from the late 50s/60s judging from the Nervex lugs/general design. I bought the bike with many 80s components fitted, but I can see it's had a respray, so I expect these were fitted at the time this was done so to upgrade the bike. The decals look to be a more modern version of the standard MacLean ones, but the headtube badge has to be original. The bike is a classic marque built tourer set up with many of the usual touring braze ons ie. canti brakes, centre pull brake bridge, mudguard and bottle cage bosses. Obviously, it doesn't have the extra ones found on more modern tourers, but the bike is still very capable and the large saddle bag can take the place of smaller sized panniers. I also have a front rack I can sell to the new owner which will allow a front bag to be fitted.
57cm frame size (from centre bottom bracket to top of seat tube), with top tube also measuring 57cm. Rear wheel OLN is 125mm.All the components are as original spec with a couple of slightly more modern bits of kit that I've upgraded the bike with. The Brooks saddle fitted is the Champion Standard version of their B17 model, and IMO this is perfect for touring due to the wider platform and thicker leather than many other models. It's also only just broken in, so no uncomfortable breaking in period to get through.
Spec as follows:
Reynolds 531 butted tubing frame and forks.
Nervex lugs with cutouts. Dropouts are Agrati branded.
Colour is metallic green with gold lug lining and cream panels to match the decals, a couple of age related chips & marks have been touched up with care and this does not distract from a great looking bike, please check out the images.
Wheels are Sunshine hubs laced to Ukai 27" alloy rims, wheels are an upgrade made prior to listing the bike for sale, and rims show virtually no wear and wheels are pretty much as new generally.
Brooks B17 Champion Standard saddle.
Suntour Bar Con indexed bar end shifters.
Stronglight 80LX triple chainset, 170mm cranks, 50/40/28 ratios.
Suntour XCD 4050 rear mech (not showing in some of the below pics, although close up shots taken once fitted do show it, see recent thread reply for explanation).
Suntour Blue Line front mech.
Epoch 6 speed freewheel 28/14t ratios.
Sachs chain.
Empella Frogglegs cantilever brakes with modern, little worn pads.
Dia Compe Aero Gran Compe brake levers Nb one of below pics was taken before I'd cleaned the levers up, seeing as I realised they actually have tan coloured hoods:)
3ttt Morphe bars with anotomic bend (bent slightly towards the rider for a touring friendly posture), 42cm width, NOS Italamundi leather effect tape fitted.
3ttt Record stem.
Tange Mercian headset.
Tange bottom bracket.
Continental Super Sport tyres, both 28c.
KKT Pro Vic II pedals with NOS Lapize toeclips and Christophe leather straps.
SR Laprade seatpost.
Bluemels Sovereign mudguards.
Karrimore Dalesman saddle bag with Uplift supporting rack so the bag can safely be fully loaded without danger of supporting straps breaking (this can be removed if you prefer the traditional look).
I will include a quality bottle cage if it's required. I also have a quality same era dynamo front/rear light set up I can sell to the new owner.
The bike is in pretty excellent condition and I've fully rebuilt it from the ground up, fully servicing all parts and checking for any wear/damage. So all parts work as they should and set up has been fine tuned to give optimum performance. The bike is ready for some serious touring/audax action:)
Collection is preferred (Hendon, NW4), but I have a bike box handy so can post the bike if needs be.
My asking price is £350> £340> £330 (plus above mentioned accessories thrown in) and a forum donation will be made if it sells here.
Please see my other sales post for details of the above mentioned other bike related stuff I'm selling. No touring stuff included though, as it's all track/ss/time trial/triathlon kit.

Sorry for the delay (in the early stages of moving house) but I've now been able to look for the wheel. But I don't think it's the news you were hoping for. I have a few of these wheels but the ones I can find are all a matt/silver colour, not the colour I think you're particularly after. I wasn't able to check through all my wheels though and just possibly there's another one hidden away somewhere, but it may well not be a front and possibly will be another silver one. But I expect you'll probably already be sorted by now anyway.

Yes, it's great tubing. the tubeset might be a bit heavier than standard 531, but this really is needed for a fully loaded and fast moving proper tourer which needs to be extra tough to stop cracking etc due to the extra loads. Of course the frame builder has something to do with it, too:) And it seems quite a pity that they stopped making the tubing, but at the same time it might mean that because of this my bike is likely to be one of the last great tourers made, as I don't think there's many other really classy tubesets with the same qualities around for the more recent bikes:)

Hi all,
A forthcoming house move has forced me to to clear out all my less frequently used bikes/parts so to make the job easier and help towards all the costs. So this bike sadly has to go.It's a Bob Jackson Super Tourist tourer from the early 90s. It's the Jackson classic tourer set up with full braze ons for canti brakes, centre pull bridge, mudguards and pannier racks, and x3 bottle cages (one set of bosses is on the underside of the downtube). And of course there's the usual trademark semi wraparound seat stay caps (with Jackson pantographing in this case). See below Jackson catalogue extract from 1986 for very similar spec to my Super Tourist. Also mentions the frame angles etc. One thing to note though is the forks matched to the frame aren't from the same builder, although still look to be well made and are proper tourer forks with all the necessary braze ons.
56cm frame size (from centre bottom bracket to top of seat tube), with top tube also measuring 56cm. Rear wheel OLN is 130mm.
All the components are as original spec with a couple of slightly more modern bits of kit that I've upgraded the bike with.
Spec as follows:
Reynolds 531 butted tubing frame.
Spearpoint lugs with cutouts, and bottom bracket shell has fancy webbing to increase stiffness.
Colour is metallic navy blue with yellow lug lining to match the decals, a couple of age related chips & marks (as this is original paint) have been touched up with care and this does not distract from a great looking bike, please check out the images.
Shimano Exage hubs with Campagnolo Strada XL Hardox rims, wheels are an upgrade made prior to listing the bike for sale, and rims show virtually no wear and wheels are pretty much as new generally.
Shimano Dura Ace bar end shifters.
Stronglight Impact triple chainset, 170mm cranks, 48/38/28 ratios.
Shimano Ultegra triple front and rear mechs.
Shimano 9 speed cassette, 27/12 ratios.
New Shimano 105 9 speed chain.
Shimano XT Br-M734 cantilever brakes with new original, hardly worn pads.
Shimano 600 brake levers.
SR Sakae Custom Anotomic Bend (bent slightly towards the rider for a touring friendly posture), 42cm width, new BBB gel bar tape fitted.
3ttt Record stem.
Stronglight A1 headset.
Shimano un52 bottom bracket.
Schwalbe Marathon Plus front tyre and Michelin Dynamic Classic rear tyre, both 28c. New tubes fitted.
All new cables & cable outers.
Shimano M324 SPD pedals, not double sided though, so easy to switch between clipless and ordinary riding.
Selle Italia Rolls Saddle.
Shimano 600 aero seatpost.
SKS plastic/alloy mudguards.
Blackburn rear rack.
I will include three sets of quality bottle cages if they're required. I can also swap the pedals for traditional platform and cage/strap ones, if this is more your cup of tea. I also have some pannier bags and a small French style front bag rack I can sell to the new owner if required. As well as a bumper large sized vintage, nice quality Karrimor saddle bag, which can serve for long days out by itself:) The new owner will also have the option to buy a quality same era dynamo front/rear light set up.
The bike is in pretty excellent condition and I've fully rebuilt it from the ground up, fully servicing all parts and checking for any wear/damage. Besides having to replace the chainrings, there were just two other things I found which were that there was a small crack to the rear mudguard (I've epoxy'd this together and all's well), and that one of the frame's cable guides to prevent head tube cable rub has partially broken off, but again I've epoxy'd the cable into what's left of the guide and it's stayed put. So all parts work as they should and set up has been fine tuned to give optimum performance. The bike is ready for some serious touring/audax action:)
Collection is preferred, but I have a bike box handy so can post the bike if needs be.
My asking price is £500 and a forum donation will be made if it sells here. Nb this price has been increased from what I originally asked, but I must admit to only doing minimal research into pricing the bike, and the amount of peeps and keenness of some of them dibsing it means I feel it's appropriate to offer it up to all these chaps at the higher price and the first one to accept will take it. I was prepared to sell the bike to the first dibs chap at the original price, but as it happens the deal fell through.
Please see my other sales post for details of the above mentioned other bike related stuff I'm selling. No touring stuff included though, as it's all track/ss/time trial/triathlon kit. I may well be selling another touring bike though (already sold a normal road bike on here) as I'm forced to continue with it. Watch this space.

As you say it's the middle sprockets, I'm wondering if it's a case of trying to do some extra fine tuning to get the indexing absolutely nailed? I'm thinking if the tuning is a hair out, then the first 3/4 sprockets would still index, then the final 3/4 would be the same because these ones tend to be widely spread ratios more than the others. The middle few would be relatively close ratio, and would show up the tiniest misalignment in the indexing. So you might want to try fettling a little more, aiming to get the chain positioned absolutely bang on centre of the smallest sprocket when clamping down the cable pinch clamp, which would obviously mean quite a few tries. I think it's made more fiddly due to the chain being the extra thin 10 speed type, although I admit I'm used to dealing with 8 and 9 speed setups more.

Just had the chap with first dibs view the bike, but he's decided against buying as it wasn't quite what he was after. So over to you if you're still interested.
