Depends on what generation the frame is.
I had 42c knobbly tyres front and rear on my V4 without issues.

All BB-spindles i know of have M8x1 threads

The t-bar is screwed into the spindle thread.
The parts come from an old cheapo chainbreaker.

Fucking the splines is quite easy on most square taper BB made of aluminium.
It's also quite easy to avoid if you fix your tool to the BB to prevent slipping.

If your chainring is bigger than your sprocket you move forward
If your chainring is smaller than your sprocket you move backwards
If both are equally sized they cancel each other out leaving you with a fancy push bike
