agree with sorethroat - spas for 105s, 36 spoked on exal 17s. Brilliant, strong wheels both for road/rough stuff. They've been on crosscheck for 18 months through
winter/touring no problems - money £200 very well spent!

Newbie question 1: if I go with a 126mm hub can I still fit a 9speed cassette?

You certainly can. I run a 7speed with a spacer on one bike and a 9 speed cassette on my raleigh clubman. I'm going to try a 10 speed cassette on my bob jackson build also spaced at 126mm.

excellent project vandal. I agree with you that fat stuff is too expensive. You certainly seem to have a first rate knowledge of bike parts and what will work and how. Most of us are basically brasic most of the time so your project gives me ideas.

I've converted a couple of frames into fixies over the years. My two pence worth is
buy new quality wheels, new bottom bracket, headset and pedals. Anything else can/should be 2nd hand. It is not worth spending a lot on something which ultimately is only a hack bike.
Don't bother re spraying a frame (unless it is something worthwhile) Buy a bottle of Artist's Linseed Oil and coat the frame liberally with It - preserves the frame.

lovely frame littigator. About 2 years ago I resprayed and rebuilt my raleigh clubman
531 using modern 9speed kit. It's a lovely ride. I even did a time trial on it and found that I went as 'quick' as I do on my aluminium ribble which I aid £900 quid for!!

Tubing? Forks?
Size? Seat Tube centre to top?. Top Tube centre to centre?

I took the plunge and bought a ' roller. What a super ride especially with 32mm
marathon tyres - like sitting in an armchair.
The only problem was a sliding seatpost - any forumongers experiencing a similar problem?
