The comparison could be stretched - like say you stab someone with a pen, they give you lines. Or you beat someone to death with an iron, so they make you wear creased shirts for a year. Or, you use a car to kill someone, they say "naughty, you will need to take the bus for twelve months".

And in this case even more so, as you say - not random at all, the guy has stepped out of being a motorist and is now a cunt with a weapon, and it should be treated as such, as if he chased the kid and tried to kill him with a big one tonne steel baseball bat. I think this could be codified somehow. That as long as you are playing within the parameters laid down in the Highway Code, then you are a driver in a car and subject to the sanctions which apply to drivers (bans and fines generally), but should you step out of that (speeding, using a phone, driving without due care) then you are no longer a driver, you are in possession of a weapon and you are swinging it about - hit someone and it is assault, ABH, GBH, manslaughter and in this case attempted murder.

Well, I won't be buying any levers right away - I have some old Exage levers to play with, so I will find out how grabby they are. I have to say I do like them quite grabby in a sense - I generally set up my brakes to bite as soon as I touch the levers. I will see. Thing is I had a rear 4500 caliper, so just bought the front (a 4600) to match. £20. In fact, I could not see any Shimano calipers that did not say they needed that set of matching STi levers. At Wiggle that is. There are other brands of course.

If it works I can buy some nice levers.

If it is grabby I will either get rid of the brakes and get something with less specific compatibility requirements or dab a little grease on the brake blocks to smooth things out.

It bust the chainring too? I wonder what happened? Maybe someone's foot was waving around a little bit with the effort of pushing down on the other pedal?

I would go with what shimano say's, as they tend to be very good at making things that are not compatible with their other things.

I use 7900 levers with another manufacturors brakes and they're fine, that said.

This way round is usually fine and less noticeable, but you would probably get better performance with the 'correct' matching brakes.

Some say "yes", some say "no" and some say "maybe". If I did decide to go with some matched levers, what can I get which are not STi levers. All the ones they have listed are STi, and I have already installed downtube shifters, so I am only looking for brake levers. What has got the same pull?

Non-Shimano would be fine.

That needs adjustment - probably a couple quarter turns of the barrel adjuster would do the job.

It does sound as if the driver is taking the view that it was not his fault. I will be very keen to find out what the court finds in this case.
