how do i get the nut to sit securely in my pole(handle)?

ok guys, im trying to fashion up myself a mallett. i have the pvc pipe, and the metal pole. whats the best way all you guys have found to get the two securely attached together???

ps i have a metre of pipe if anyone wants me to cut down some sections for them, let me know :)
