I bought a dura ace front mech off here a while back, and have just got around to putting it on my mum's bike for her. Everything was going fine, up until I get to the part which clamps the gear cable to the mech! It seems as though the threads are gone inside (not sure how that could've happened). Otherwise the mech is sound, so I want to make it work.

I have tried using a nut and bolt, however there is not enough clearance for the nut when shifting up, as it is obstructed by the part of the mech with the hi/lo screws. Any ideas?

Also does anybody know anywhere to buy a protective face mask? Asthma + sanding paint is not good

I don't own a torque wrench... but torque specifications if given should be followed really I would assume. I will be borrowing a torque wrench when I install some carbon parts soon

yeah, that's right. facing sorted this problem for me but I guess you must have something else going on!

Ha thanks for the mention! :) I'll be watching this as I am going to start mine properly in about 3 weeks when I get back from my holiday in spain. I was thinking about putting some CF tape as a top layer just to get a nicer looking finish as well so I'm glad you mentioned that. I haven't even had time to sand the paint off my donor frame as I'm in the middle of exams :(

Until the duke and duchess visited that is, as the council thought the best way to celebrate cambridge being the cycling capital of Britain was by not allowing anybody to lock their bikes up during the visit and removing those that were.

The front mech I bought recently came with a shim to fit to my steel frame, so you should be able to find a shim for it no problem.

You could buy a single half link and add it? My brother once got an old (large) chainring and stuck it halfway between the front and rear cranksets, it held the chain apart and stayed put increasing tension... bit of a bodge though.

So you have tried to adjust the front one, not the rear? Some pictures may help! Of the bottom brackets, chainrings etc. Of course you could always buy a new chain/add a few links if you're sure everything else is ok.

isn't the front bottom bracket adjustable? I think it is on my dawes super galaxy, as it is an eccentric one.

the tapering of each hole is meant to prevent cracking. If you just drill a hole as some people have done, you run the risk of your parts snapping. I wouldn't do it but it does look nice. As far as I know it is a weight saving but increases drag so has a net effect of zero :)
