Covid zero lockdown craziness continues here. It's day 8 of the lockdown on this side of the river, so day 12 on the other side, but that's just the official lockdowns. Tons of rumours flying around and it's hard to tell what's true or not - the dog being beaten to death is definitely true, a few of the breakouts are true. According to the government, the medical worker committing suicide isn't true (though I saw the video) and the old people starving to death isn't true (though people are running out of food). There are two confirmed cases in my building so it's going to be sealed for 14 days. I spend a lot of time looking out the window.

Children who test positive for covid are taken away from their parents and put in a room with other babies and children with covid. It's a terrifying situation for any of my friends with kids. A baby died yesterday on one of these "wards", the mother made a video and posted it on social media, I think it's been taken down now. Turns out we're not living with covid nor are we even living.

"war on covid" and quest for zero covid continues here... The army arrived yesterday, along with 50,000 medics etc. The media boasted that more resources arrived in Shanghai than Russia sent to invade Ukraine.
Lots of foreigners in Shanghai think that the city will get special treatment and have been talking about stuff like petitions to the government. My (pessimistic? realistic?) opinion is that we won't get special treatment. Other cities want us to have it just as bad as them and Beijing wants to suppress any ideas that the Shanghai local gov have. We will get back to zero covid even if means we're locked inside for months.
Personally I'd appreciate it if the meme thread could be kept well stocked.

Day one of Shanghai Puxi lockdown here. At 8am everyone in my building was rounded up and we lined up in groups of ten outside, before being allowed to walk to the testing site (around the corner). Quick swab and then walk back, then back inside. We'll do it again the day after tomorrow - not allowed out of the apartment until then.
The east side of the city was due to be released at 5am this morning but 23 out of 24 communities had "too many" (ie. not zero) cases so they're in a different kind of lockdown (ie. it's exactly the same but has a different name). Some people have already been in lockdown for 14 days and have run out of food so the government is delivering food parcels... so that's good I guess.
The west (best) side of the city is due to be released on tuesday but it's almost certainly not going to happen, and even if you are lucky enough to be allowed out, nothing will be open, no shops, nothing.
I might sign up to be a volunteer, just to get out of the house. Also I get a hazmat suit. And I might get first dibs on the food deliveries when we all run out here too.

My girlfriends mum (who is Japanese) swears she knows people that have had to visit "trauma" centres when visiting Paris
Can confirm that the general opinion of Paris in China (amongst people who've never been there) is "so romantic" and "so perfume". Everyone who's been there thinks it's a filthy hellhole (apart from my New Yorker friend said that Paris is "weirdly clean"...).

Shanghai has turned some big exhibition halls into quarantine centres for asymptomatic patients. If you test positive you have to go there and stay until you have two negative PCR tests. 100s of camp beds in a giant hall. Very little running water. Not much actual testing going on. Photos/videos are absolutely horrific.
Yay zero covid.

Meabh's diet is going well - she was 4.2kg at the beginning of February, not a lot but too much for a small cat. She's now 3.8kg and when I stand above her I can see that she has a waist, rather than looking like a little airship. She hasn't seem massively fussed about having her portions reduced, she chomps her way through her food quickly but isn't ever bothered about mine (unlike Celeste, who will fight me for crisps). The vet said that 3.5kg is probably Meabh's ideal weight so there's still a little way to go but I'm happy with her progess!

What! People are insane. She's lucky to have you (even if she also has a few annoyed cats to deal with). What's her name?
