You can use pretty much any outer ring. However as you'll be using a range of gears you'll need a wider bottom bracket so you can push hard in your top combo 48x12 for example withought the chain dropping outside.
You'll also need one of these or something similar to stop the chain dropping in when you are in the lowest of combinations. http://www.acecosportgroup.com/shop/k-edge-chain-catchers/cross-single-chain-catcher.html
Chain drop doesn't happen often with a single front but it's always at the worst time if it does happen. Good luck.

reepz?

Had a beer with this fella in the Verge 4 years ago (he was on this bike). Old skool G is right.
Nice guy and jaw dropping bike in the flesh. Tastes may change over time but a lot of time and love was put into that and it showed.
Think he had a bikeish related clothes label as well. Bit of a blur as it's so long ago..

shame there isn't a better alternative with all the classic track pedals on the market.

very nice, cheers. i've been using an Acor 4 piece shim (http://www.dotbike.com/p/8056) - dearer and and it's an absolute pain in the arse to install :(
2 piece makes much more sense.

Hi Lynx, if you’re still interested the Nitto Dynamics go up to 120mm
The NOS 3TT to 140mm.If it’s the quill bit you need longer, the silver Kalloy KL NOS seem to have a longer quill than most. Hope it’s helpful.

. Best of luck with your dangerous and ineffectual rush-hour training.
HoP is a positive thing it's an opportunity to get together and ride rather than bitch and tear people down from the comfort of a keyboard.
I don't go to this enough, but when I have been I've only seen good things from the people who ride and organise this.

OK, so I need to check all spokes and have a really close look for a buckle. If it needs work, what should I expect to pay an LBS for a true?
If it's just a loose spoke and you're around east london I'll happily lend you a spoke key or sort it for you. have got red green and black park tools so one should fit.

Why does my left crank keep coming loose?
It did it last week and I had to limp to the nearest bike shop to tighten it up. Then I set off out today and noticed it was coming loose again. How can the threads on a brand new BB/hardly used crankset be fucked already? Am I doing it wrong?
Sometimes you get a new BB but don't get new crank bolts as well. Alloy threads on old bolts can be slightly worn.
I've got better results from getting a new set of (allen type) bolts with every new BB and then only installed them after I've tightened properly with the old school steel bolts (socket type). Seems to work OK.
More likely for the thread on the softer alloy bolt to be screwed that the one in the harder spindle.

Wut? It even has a gear chart in it - sprinkle a 55x14 on a HHSB and you'll go a long way towards one less HHSB.
cool if you don't like the chainrings but picking a silly high ratio out of the air doesn't make them any less bling.
You can get them in a 48t as well......http://www.alexscycle.com/vintage-nos/shimano-zen-olympic-chainring.html
Just saying I see where the original post was coming from is all. Each to his own.

Hi Rogan.
Sorry for the essay...
Along with DFP's shout it's worth noting that with cartridge bottom brackets you should assemble them by installing the plastic ring/cup first. Then the main metal unit from the other side.
Also it's not always the case that the plastic ring goes on the left non-drive side. Some BBs have it the other way.
So dissassemble the BB check which way it should be orientated - there should a label - and then try again by placing the plastic ring in fully first in whichever side it should be.
Finally not to patronise but to be thorough remember that left non drive side is the normal righty tighty / lefty loosy deal, but the drive side is the opposite and tightens anti - clockwise.
If it is genuinely too long and for a biger BB shell you can always cut it down with a pipe cutter but remember to go back and forth along a single turn (360 deg) of the thread not round and round chasing it along or cutting straight across the plastic threads.
