I did a home made version of the XT one using a Hope Pro 2 front hub and some spacers etc from Velo Solo and a 10mm axle. Drilled out the Hope QR end caps to 10mm and used some turned down cones to sit inside the end caps to limit the tension on the bearings from the axle when tightened on the drop outs. Worked really well

Thanks - yes the custom spacer is a tight sliding fit on the Gusset ring, to get it all to line up - 7 pins in the drive flange and 6 holes in the ring + the freewheel can rotate with the Gusset spacer fixed to it - we had to find a spot where it all lined up - we used centre punch marks that line up to show the 'sweet spot'. the 7 pins were a tight fit in the custom ring (and loctited in) and were just a few thou' undersized to ensure they located in the flange easily. The 6 grub screws are just undersized for the holes in the Gusset ring but bottom out on the freewheel body. There is no discernible play in the system - it is locked up solid as the Gusset cassette lock ring pushes the whole lot onto the freewheel body and then the custom ring on to the hub face. I have had a couple of rides now and it works really well and the Shamal wheels are really fast.

Hi JackC,
i ride fixie a lot - but i am 15 miles north of Brighton near Henfield - some great country lane rides out here ! Great if you can get a group Fixie ride going but if not there are group rides with the roadies you may like to go on - i have ridden fixie with them on the flat rides, - Brighton Mitre from Cafe Nero in Hove on a Sat am and Sat / Sun with the On the Rivet CC from the small batch coffee shop or Velo cafe in Btn - see websites for info -

Having just driven into Brighton centre and back for a hair cut - i can advise that the 20mph limit is a totally pointless waste of money - the Brighton Town planners have already made it impossible to go that fast in Brighton with their policy of traffic lights, one way streets, closing 'rat runs' , bus lanes, lane restrictions etc etc !! The latest cock up is the loss of 2 lanes on the Lewes road from the bottom of Coldean Lane - so now the plan is complete - all the major arteries into the Town are restricted leading to lovely 2 mile queues into town on any busy period. In the body, restrictions in the main arteries lead to death ! ... But on the positive side, lots more fun filtering between the traffic and sprinting off the lights and if they set up a speed camera in a 20 mph zone we can all play 'set off the flash'' sprint competition. Happy riding all !

HI Rob
Chain Adjust - lift back wheel and spin cranks slowly - look at the chain there is always a tight spot due to tolerances etc. see where the chain is tightest by pushing down in the middle and feeling the tension (care ! don't get finger caught in the chain !) When u find the tightest spot, stop the wheel rotation and note the crank position. Now adjust the chain in this position (at it's tightest) - if you adjust it at a loose spot it will be too tight at the tight spot. Undo the wheel nuts, pull back the wheel centrally till the chain is tight - there should be a total of 1 inch movement possible if you try to move the centre of the chain up or down with your fingers. When happy with the amount of play in the chain, tighten wheel nuts. Spin the cranks and recheck the tension. Done !
ref Straps - i recommend you have some form of foot retension on a fixie !! i have used toe clips and straps which are fine, i have no knowledge on just straps as i only use SPDs.
pipecutter is better.
