Yes, the intricate parts on many full susser's linkages can get mullered by British weather. I'm much happier with my hardtail during winter knowing that I have easier maintenance at the end...

If not, you could borrow my commuter, it's a Giant XTC with rigid carbon forks. I've used it round the Surrey Hills once, didn't like the lack of front bounce but it's reasonably light. Joel's borrowed it a couple of times for XC rides with me.
