^you'd think given it's a 'big thing' Stella McCartney might have bothered turning up in something other than her pyjamas. It's not like she grew up in Liverpool is it?
She was ordered not to make Wolff-we spunked the budget on coke then sneezed out a logo the morning of the deadline-Olins look bad. -

Is this the only place one can be cynical about the Olympics? It feels like legislation may have been changed to make criticism of the Olympics an act of Treason.
I was thinking today about how I would answer the reporter in the street asking what the Olympics meant to me:-
5 weeks of struggling to get into work to earn a wage that is then taxed to pay for a nice summer jolly I've not been invited to for a bunch of bankers, decorated by a load of "designers" paid a fortune to produce utter bile, out of all of which the only discernible effect I will notice will be the additional traffic congestion and a few years of decreased investment in our local area.

I'd avoid shared ownership. More pertinently, my other half, who works as a policy bod for Shelter, also says it's not good.
As I say, it gets mixed reviews. It's important to understand the product, but if you do and you shop around you can do very well.Where do you stand though with the other 75% of the house? Say the person owning the rest wants to sell it, or if you want to sell it?
Shared ownership is a government backed scheme, and to qualify you must earn under a threshold household income. You get a long lease from the Housing Association who become your landlord. If they want to sell, they can, just like any landlord can - the landlord's obligations under the lease pass to the entity they sell to, your rights are protected.
When you sell on, you get a percentage of the proceeds of sale equivalent to your share - so if the property's increased in value you get a % of that increase. If it's gone down you'll take a % hit.
You can buy new chunks as and when you want, but there are some admin charges to be aware of. Generally it's worth keeping in mind that it is slightly more complicated than out-and-out ownership, and there are measures in place to make sure nobody's abusing the system - eg, you will find it difficult to sublet the property: it's not designed as an investment vehicle.
All in all, it's not a surefire lottery win, but nor is it a certain road to ruin - just something to be aware of and to consider.
-
new build boxy flats are three a penny in stratford and around the olympic park and the value of thise has gone down in recent years, while decent terraced house have gone up
It might be worth checking out housing associations and what they have to offer.
Shared Ownership gets mixed reviews and it's worth reading through the paperwork carefully but...
As an example there's some 1 bed flats in ec1 valued at approx £350,000. You buy 25% for £87,500 with a mortgage. You then pay rent on the remaining 75% but it's a rate of 2.5% of the outstanding equity per annum.
So your rent is £6,562.50 pa so £546.88 pm
Your mortgage is say 5% fixed borrowing £70,000 so £375 a month.
So you pay £921.88 per month.
It's quite a bit, and there's a service charge but it's your own place, and the prices are all relative - there's not many ways to get a flat valued at £350,000 by paying £920 a month...
As Dicki points out Stratford has a lot of these so prices there are a fair bit lower...
-
Being wealthy enough to be able to hire an accountant who can help you to avoid paying income tax is not a crime. Rape is, and always will be, a crime. Comparing the two is frankly ridiculous.
Not really - the arguments are the same: because people are getting away with something it is right that we should stop pursuing it. -
Yeah, that was pretty shocking.
The main reason cited for cutting the 50p rate was that it was being so routinely circumvented that reducing it to 45p might reduce the incentive to dodge the tax and actually collect more in revenues.
I'm expecting Ken Clarke to stand up next to say that as rape conviction rates are rubbish they're going to make it legal.
-
I'm with Walm on a lot of what's been said. Currently 9 months into first mortgage. Repayments are slightly less than the rent was, and £200 of each payment is paying off capital loan.
For that we are now responsible for anything that goes wrong in the flat and for an annual service charge which looks likely to include some major works to the roof and external parts of the building.
That said, a flat in the same block just sold for 15% more than we paid 9 months ago so it's swings and roundabouts, I guess. It's just better to have the full facts and figures and to know whether you're on a swing or a roundabout...

On the budget, in the face of every news agency reporting his decisions with headlines about robbing pensioners, George Osborne says on the BBC, "I am not in the business of writing the next days' headlines".
He then goes on to stress again and again the news that GlaxoSmithKline have come out and said the budget is fantastic and they're investing .5 billion in the UK on the back of it.
Riiiiiight, so they made that decision overnight, right? And not over the last few weeks in discussion with the toad, announcing on the day of the budget so that it will make the next day's papers.
"I am not in the business of writing the next day's headlines"
Lying Fucktard. That's exactly what you were trying to do.
-
Fucking toads. One key change as a result of legislation is that Secretary of Health is no longer legally responsible for provision of the NHS. Does this mean that, as he no longer has any resposibility, Andrew Lansley will no longer collect a wage for his now non-job?
In 5 years time the Tories will be encouraging us to castigate GPs for destroying the NHS. Creative Destruction - It's their next favourite hobby after nepotism, self-service, gay-bashing and closeted homosexual sado-masochism.
Edit: forgot to say: very good diagram Tiswas - I'll be nicking that.

Hey Gav, cheers for the caliper.
