Think I've found out what one of the issues is. The inner chainring is a 28-tooth non-standard one rather than the usual 30-tooth, which explains a fair bit. I think I've got a 30-tooth somewhere, so I'm going to fit that and see how it goes. Couple of extra chainring teeth should give me a bit more leeway at least.

So it looks like I have an impossible ratio. I've done the big/big/no derailleur and the small chain ring is unusable (i.e. derailleur bends back on itself so the chain touches itself) from about the third largest cog down. I'm now down to adding just one link between the two quicklinks (which I'm not entirely happy with), but big ring big cog pulls the derailleur practically straight. I haven't tried this yet as I still don't know whether that will be any good in the small cog.

Cables, new saddle and stepped ferrule installed. Now have to add some extra chain length as I cut it too short to go on the largest cog on the big ring. Wouldn't say the rear mech shifting is all that 'crisp' either, but it's good enough for now. Discovered the rear wheel has a fair bit of wobble in it, so might be learning how to true wheels this weekend.

Just watched the Campagnolo version (which I'm using) and they do small/small/through derailleur, which is what I did. Problem is, small front chainring is tiny on a triple, so the chain ends up really short to avoid it touching itself at the rear derailleur when on the smallest cog. Anyway, I'll give it another whirl tomorrow. Thanks for the (heh) links.

Just finished the first season, at the end of which my mate gets pushed in front of a rubbish truck. Good series, will watch the second season.
