These poorly thought out front rack road/CX/tarck bike combos. Are for hipstering around London/Newyork etc. Carrying some ironic bread or something. They are not cargo bikes, and neither are they functional porn. TRy loading one with more than 5Kg and riding it more than 10km.
pffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffft!
(IMHO)
yeah man but they look *siiiiiiick.
*or dope, or some other word for good

I've heard nothing but good thin of Ortliebs, as I should since they're the best and most popular choice of touring panniers.
I read several bad things.
Clips not great for rough road, too easily removed, good while water proof but invariably the water proofing dose not last under heavy use and then you are stuck with a pannier that is not breathable so gets all clammy but you still have to use dry bags in side. Carridice duck cotton for me. Dry bags for the stuff that needs to be dry, I can also organise different stuff in different dry bags leaving the big pannier out of my small tent, stuff that needs to breath out side dry bags, repairable and doesn't look shit like Ortliebs.

I don't think custom MTBs are worth it in general. MTBs vary so much and riding interests change depending on where you're living, hence different types of bike setups. I ride a rigid 29er single speed, but I live in the south of the UK, if I moved to North Wales I'd sell my bike and set up 26 ht with gears and a 120 mm fork. Even living in the south my riding style changes depending on my mood. Most of the time the bike I have is great but I sometimes fancy something more like a jump bike to go back to my BMX days. MTB is too varied to put ll your money into one bike.
