Spoke to a guy called Duncan Lowe who makes decisions regarding Monaco House. He seemed open to the idea of us using the car park but would like us to send him an email that he can put to his clients (i.e. the businesses that use the car park) to show them what we do. Dan, do you have an email written that you've been using for this kind of thing? If so, would be worth sending one to him: dlowe@savills.com emphasising how safe and sedate a game it is!

Just went down to the car park again with the intention of taking some pictures. There were plenty of cars on all three levels today. Before I could even get out my camera I was approached by a security guard. He asked if I was lost. I told him about our court predicament and asked did he have anything against us using it on a Sunday, we would damage it etc etc. He said it seemed fine by him but that he had no authority so go and talk to the front office of the Monaco building. I did that and explained the situation again to the guy on the front desk. As I expected he seemed thoroughly against it and said that it wasn't his responsibility. But he did say that someone could ring the number on the to let sign and speak to the boss about it. There are cameras everywhere so unless we get permission it wouldn't last five minutes until security chucked us out.
Should I ring the number or give it up as a non-starter?

On my way home from polo today I found a good possibility for a covered court. Has anyone seen this spot near the A38/Bristol St yet?
I expect people have already looked at multistorey car parks but...
It's a car park that, as far as I could tell from the signs, belongs to the retail premises on the ground floor of the Monaco building (left of picture) and is located behind them near the garage (entrance indicated by shitty arrow). At the moment these shops are completely empty and there is a 'to let' sign up. I think the whole building is to let. There were no cars at all on any of the floors of the car park (I think it's three floors) when I checked it out, about 2 oclock Sunday. It seems like the potential tenants and their customers wont be using it for a while so it might do as a good wet day backup court for a few months, or even on a more permanent basis if the shops aren't open on a Sunday (meaning no customers using the car park) or if we are approached by security but win them over with our charm. I got in there without any hassle as there isn't a gate on the entrance so if we wanted to/had permission we could play anytime. After scoping it out here's the pros and cons that i could see.
On the plus side:- covered, by the car parking floor above
- super flat smooth but grippy surface
- big, about 1 and a half times the size of highgate
- barriers on all four sides
- free
- convenient parking! + garage sells junk food snacks!
On the negative side:
- Big concrete support beams make the ceiling reasonably low. You could still swing your mallet like a nutter but chips and lobs are probably out of the question
- access ramps at both ends mean there would be a gap in the barriers at the side behind the goals. Could be sorted by making some barriers of our own. You'd need about 6m of barriers to cover the gap. Maybe plywood sheet with a few bits of scrap pine screwed on the back to make it stand up.
- one side barrier is just a wall about 1.5m high so there's a gap above it. If you managed to hit the ball through here it would drop down one floor onto an access road at the back, irritating if it happened a lot.
- A gutter running along the floor on one side abt a 300mm from the wall. Compromises the otherwise perfect surface.
What do we think? I can go down in the week and get some pictures if they're any use
