n3il i'm not really sure, it's an old puch frame but google couldn't give me any conclusive answers. i'll get some measurements as soon as i can, the bike isn't at my house at the moment. were you asking because you might have something?
DFP thanks for your advice but that's not really what i was after. i'd rather he didn't throw away a bike which could easily be fixed, and just buy a new one. i think it's wasteful and also i think that fixing up a bike would do him some good in the long run by, for example, making him more self sufficient and helping him learn more about bikes. i'm trying to foster more of a DIY approach in him because personally i think its a large part of cycling and a good thing generally (barring obvious examples of course)

hello everyone. my brother is trying to get into cycling and bought an old racing bike, which he has since neglected (in the hope that it will fix itself). i'm really keen to get him riding instead of driving and, after struggling against a stuck seat post, he needs a new seat post and a saddle. does anyone have anything lying around? it doesn't need to be good, i'm just after something cheap/free. can anyone help me out? if so please send me a PM. thanks
