hey, lae. I am giving i think your third way a go - rustoleum. I am gonna attach a picture of the forks, which are the worst affected part:

If i get a can of rustoleum (Which seems to have more colours), and get a cream ish colour, i suppose 250 ml would be enough for the small areas affected. Obviously the paint will not match exactly but that really is not a concern. I want to get rid of the rust first and foremost because it seems dangerous to have so much. Is this the right stuff?

hi,
i know there's already some info about this floating about lfgss, but i need a specific idea of what to do because i know nothing about painting metal -i have a frame with some pretty extensive surface rust on the forks and frames. LBS said just put some hammerite straight to rust paint on, but i've read a lot of bad stuff about that on here. should i sand the rust away first? then paint over with normal plasti-kote colour spray - maybe with a primer?
if anyone has a good idea on how to go about this would be much appreciated.
thanks a lot, ben

Hope this isn't asked all the time...
Got a new frame and the last person had been sand papering the paint work away on the forks - after a week or so of the bad rain this month they started to look like this before I'd even noticed:

There's rust everywhere paint isn't, and that includes on the rest of the frame... Should I be worried? What can I do? LBS seemed pretty chilled about it...
Thanks,

its a really old sachs one - local bloke with tools didnt have the right one:

My shifters are indexed but I've never had them relate all that well with the derailleur.
Hilary Stone has some stuff like this:

would that be alright?
thanks

Hey guys.
Just got a new chain and having some massive problems with my gears jumping around on the (very old) 6 speed freewheel. I've never replaced one of these before but it looks like it needs to go along with the derailleur. It is a normal threaded freewheel (not freehub).
I don't have the chain whip tool or anything, so the LBS has to remove the old one. I just have some questions about installing the new one:
Do I need to get another 6 speed one? Does the size of my hub limit the size of freewheel i can put on it?
If the LBS remove old one, and I have the new one, can I just screw it on myself and tighten it with pedallling, or does it need some kind of adjustment that I'm not qualified to do?
Thanks a lot,

Hi,
trying to help friends fix their rubbish student bikes which all have internal epicyclic gear hubs... never dealt with these.
The recurring problem with these hubs seems to be the gear slipping off causing the whole system to free wheel without the chain turning the wheel. It happens when changing gear and can be rectified by shifting the gear a bit - but it makes the bikes pretty unridable.
Everyone seems to have these problems with the old bangers they've been sold... and the LBS are repeatedly charging £££s for fixing...
Anyone know how to fix these?
Thanks a lot

Hi,
got this annoying headset that won't come off - only the third time oI've done this and never seen anything like this one before:

Do I need to unsrew by hand this last ring? It's really stuck, I can't move it.
it's obviously bearing casing, but I don't think I can bash it out with a hammer... Trying to sell the forks so can't bash them about. Thanks a lot
ben

I commute through old st and saw some guy riding this all the time - must have been you. I know the bike and will keep eyes peeled. description of thief worth giving at all?
