Okay. progress so far....cleaned up the bike. Surprised how much better it looks.
Got a new rear wheel. However I think the cog spacing is different to my old wheel. The chain is too big to fit onto the smallest cog. I think this means I need a new chain?
If so, how do I work out the size of chain. If I don't need a new chain then what can I do?
many thanks

thanks for all advice.
Managed to get a back wheel by placing a wanted in classifieds. Picking up tomorrow. Hopefully something that will get it ridable for the time being. I will upgrade all parts later.
Looking at the chain, it is quite rusty so I think replacement would be a good idea. Hugo, if you have one that would be great. Let me know.
I'll be on up to hall fraud tomorrow to buy some tools. checked the tools kits they have. There is one for £30 and one for about £17. does anyone know what these are like? Should I plump for the more expensive one.
Plan for tomorrow. A good clean (may do the bike as well)

thanks all.
I managed to get one. I will put that one on for the time being. Want to get it ridable. Then I would like to upgrade for nice and shinny wheel set. Any idea on what that would cost?
The guy in lbs said £30 for back wheel. Is that resonable or should I put up a wanted ad at a later date.
Next on list......a tire-tube for front wheel!
thanks

cheers for advice. I put up a wanted post for wheel.
Re: Re-gripping handle bars, that was something I wanted to do at some point. Didn't realise that I might have to do it as part of new cables on brakes.
Have been looking over sheldon brown site, but its kinda difficult to find stuff / fully understand. I need to try harder!

hi
Doing my first restoration project, apologies for the poor grasp of technical information. Included pic of bike and will get one of wheel so people can see. The back wheel is warped. Guy in shop said I may snap the spokes if I try and straighten. The wheels on there are RIGIDA choromlux (not sure if they are good/bad/worth trying to straighten).
I need a 27 1/4 chrome back wheel. It needs to be a freewheel/ threaded.
One with tyres would be a bonus. I have been told that I need 630 tires. Informed they are not very common but could still find them out there. If someone had a set I'd also consider that.
Can anyone help.
Price: Well its needs to be cheap as potatoes (can't even afford chips). I am doing this on a budget so I can get a ridable bike. Replacing a bike that was nicked. Also first time I have tried any of this and I have a list of other bits I might need to buy, including a sadle.
many thanks

Got the bike home.......
went to lbs. Vaidas Bikes in Honor oak.....really helpful guy.
He said that tires need replacing. Said I need to get 27 1/4 inch which are 630. He said the 630 was important. He also informed me that the back tire was buckled a little and trying to straighten might snap the spokes. Suggested I buy a new wheel, said I needed a 27 1/4 back wheel, said I needed a threaded wheel. Is this relatively easy to find? How much should I be paying.
Oh and he said to get it to a state where it was ridable, I need to replace brake cable. He said the pads were fine. Also said that the problems with gear may be because it just needed oiling, but replacing the cable wouldn't be a bad thing.
many thanks

cheers......tires sorted. I figured that would be the easiest bit. I was using schwabe on previous bike. Are there other tires that ppl would recommend.
How about the problem with gears. That is my biggest concern. It would shift down to lowest gear. Will that be fixed through taking apart and putting back together. Or is this because the chain needs replacing.
2ndly, replace the breaks or just the pads. Although the front one was pretty sharp when I tested it.
thanks again.

sweet. I feel much better now. Matty you think another £40 would cover it. Should I get parts in the classifieds here or shop in other places. I plan to pick up bike tomorrow and try and work out what I need in more detail. I think the first is 27inch tires.
I'll try and brixton cycs on a slow day. I have been there a few times when they were stupid busy and didn't feel like they were too keen to help.
More advise the better please.

cheers all,
Okay so I have a list now.
strip, clean, grease, replace tyres, tubes, brake pads and chain. Take to lbs (brixton cycles? which is down the road from where I work) and ask what else I could do/need.
Now do you think a novice could do this? Also I paid £40 for the bike. Did they see me coming?
-
thanks tender
Can and should a novice take apart and clean up? I am on pretty limited budget. Will it cost a fortune to get all the parts?
The lady who I bought off said it was her brothers bike. Been in shed for about a year. She said he rode it all the time.
I had more pics. But can't seem to upload. Just did some research. It's Puch Pacemaker. However, I can't find any info on it. Does any have any info on the bike.

Thanks for advice. Okay I have found a bike. It's vintage puch. Has 5 gears (from what I can tell). Hardly any rust on it. Actually I checked it over and found close to none. However, wonder whether I have taken on too much. Here are the problems with it. From what I could see:
Both the tyres have tears in them, they will both need replacing. I wasn't sure what size but the lady I bought off thinks they are 27"
The back brake needs tightening.
The gears: When I tried to go through the gears it wouldn't go through the lowest three. Chain is a little rusty.
Are these problems fixable. Could a novice do some of this work? Have I just thrown away money? Based on the pictures what would people recommend ?
I'd be grateful for any help/advice.
many thanks.

hi
I have a limited budget and been looking to buy a 2nd hand road bike. This is to replace a brompton which was stolen.
Never bought a second hand bike, but wondered if anyone had any advice / do and don'ts about what to look for when getting one. Plus any advice about where to look etc etc.
cheers

stupid question perhaps.....but what's a 3/32 bit?
Is it difficult to swap cogs over...I bought one of those essential tool kits from hals. Will that have all necessary tools.
