One issue, however, is problematic and that is speed, the 5mph pootler... Everything fits nicely into place if the speed differential between the driver and rider is minimal.
I was thinking about this recently, or just how being actually able to actually ride a bike really helps. Saw someone turning right at a crossroads; did everything right positioning-wise waiting in the middle of the crossroads but once the lights changed so the oncoming traffic stopped (and the traffic coming from the left started) there ensued a rather painful-to-watch push/wobble/attempt to get foot on pedal/wobble/pedal forward at 1mph sequence, then when they noticed the bus coming from their left (which was accelerating slowly, in a kind of anticipating the cyclist to actually be able to make it round the turn kind of way) they came to a dead halt and almost fell over. So the bus had to stop and wave encouragingly at the cyclist, who again attempted the push/wobble/pedal at 1mph sequence.
I do always wonder about this when people are complaining about roads being dangerous or whatever, as a lot of the reasons why I don't feel intimidated by traffic are due to being able to accelerate and turn effectively and ride at a decent speed, which many people don't seem able or willing to do.

that loses most of the reason for doing it...
yeh.
I appreciate that people have realised there's now basically no literal way we could get away with this and are trying be as positive about it as possible, but for me sadly there's a fair difference between getting down to ldn early with the prospect of a nice afternoon hanging out with forum people, and being stuck in ldn in the middle of the night after a ride with nowhere to go and nothing to do other than sit in the cold waiting for the trains to start running. So the revised plan means I'm out, which is a shame as I saw this as one thing I could get involved with being not london based. But who cares.
I also love it how whenever 'authority' does anything authority-like, they always try to make it as creepy and obvious that they've got all the power and there isn't a fuck you can do about it. Like with the withdrawal-of-funding threat, and the REALLY weird and creepy bit about 'yeh also I got your mobile off the site, we've now literally got your number, shall I call you up?'

Might i suggest that you use the cycle path provided on this strech of road and such issues will not occur.
Wac!
I wouldn't necessarily rant back at him, but that comment has to be contested, in a stronger way than walm here ^ suggests.
The main points I've thought up are:
His idea that the solution to inconsiderate/careless/dangerous driving by his drivers is to remove other road users from their vicinity suggests his drivers aren't capable of driving safely around other road users; if this is the case they shouldn't be on the road
He suggests you use the cycle path to avoid 'such issues'; you could just as well suggest that his drivers don't drive along that particular road and use a different route instead, which would also prevent 'such issues'. You have your reasons for choosing the road, just as his drivers have theirs, and its equally unreasonable for either of you to suggest the other changes their route - what your actual reasons for choosing the road over the cycle path are not relevant and I personally wouldn't bother trying to explain them
You using the cycle path would not in any way address the issue of his drivers driving inconsiderately/carelessly/dangerously, and so is no solution to the problem at all. e.g. what about when they do the same thing where there isn't a cycle path/to other cyclists who haven't been so lucky as to have received his wonderful advice etc.

whacking this here largely so i can refer to it as a link , to save me the time on the seat post size / top tube debate during sales here and elsewhere.
the bikes behind are identical in geometry and set up. but could be built as old 40s/50s style oversized frame or compact frame with no change in the position of feet, bum and hands.
sure there maybe some differences (for eg. long seat post may give more flex - compact maybe lighter , the oversize might get you in the knackers (standover too high) or one may or may not subjectively more pleasing aesthetically , - but for position - no difference)
so vastly different ''frame sizes'' (seat tube length) can give the same 'top tube' (virtual) length, wheel base, steering angle
I don't quite get the point here.. the fact that two identical-sized bikes are identical in size? The fact that if you keep all the contact points in the same place all the contact points stay in the same place regardless of what green triangles you draw between them? I don't think many people would consider seat-tube length to be the sole defining criterion of 'frame size' - especially with compact frames - and even with a horizontal top-tube, top-tube length isn't an absolute measure of how 'long' a bike is, as demonstrated for example by this bike, which due to the small headtube would actually work out 'longer' than say 55cm square (depending on how high you have the stem, of course).
The fact still remains that if you have a position in mind, there is still a fairly limited range of frame sizes that will allow you to achieve that position.

or as they used to call it in Yorkshire: "Ont' cog"
LOVE this! Is that really true?
After taking a quick ride on a beautiful black whip he'd built I was instantly hooked. For me, riding fixed is just such a great minimalist thing: pedal slower, you go slower, pedal faster, you go (really) faster... you can feel the road and feel what you're doing - it's TIGHT. I fell in love with riding fixed instantly and asked him to build me one straight away.
It's a Zen thing, right?

I think the only question you need to ask - which you have essentially answered just by the existence of this thread/your question, is would you have done the same thing if it was some lycra'd up roadie/hipster w/ turnups&beanie hat/agéd audaxer/someone just like yourself?
I think commending someone for simply avoiding doing something stupid is pretty much inherently condescending, tbh. Oh you didn't fall off your bike? Nice move. Oh you didn't ride across a busy junction when the lights were on red? Nice move. etc.
I mean, encouraging sensible riding is a good thing. But it's only the ones who aren't already sensible that need telling about it, and acting all impressed that someone was sensible pretty strongly implies you were expecting them, for whatever reason, to not be sensible in the first place. Which, presumably, is the case for any given 'kind' of cyclist. But as I said at the start, which kinds would you smile at and then notice how they smiled back and then start a thread (in the particular specific sub-forum) on the internet worrying about whether you had been condescending? Basically,The answers are:
Yes
No

hold on hold on. is this rear/front tyre thing an hilarious joke for new people? i've never noticed tyres to be sold as front and rear?
the hard compound version says "halo courier berlin HC" on the side in red. only recommended for rear.
Further advice from earlier in thread. These tyres are actually not road legal for use on the front of a bicycle due to the poorer quality rubber

DO IT. Where/what do you work (as)?
