Oh, also this http://iontheband.bandcamp.com/album/ion
From my favorite record shop:
http://www.aquariusrecords.org/bin/search.cgi?search_string=%22waters+of+dusk%22+abolished&searchfield=KeywordON s/t (self-released) cd 7.98 add to cart
We must admit, we don't know too much about these mysterious local post-metallers. Here's what we do know: They're from San Francisco (we think?), this is their debut full length (maybe??), and they're called Ion (we're actually pretty sure about that one). Oh, and they play totally killer, frenzied, chaotic, hyperblasting post black metal. Ion are all about contrasts: Beautifully melancholic melodic riffs suddenly dissipate into a whirling disarray of dissonance. Frantic blast beats give way to wide open minimal spaciousness before becoming enveloped again in an avalanche of buzzing guitars and pummeling drums. The vocals alternate between anguished rasps and bellowed death metal growls. During their downtime, the songs may descend into disembodied shortwave ambience. Hushed acoustic guitars haunt the landscape. A full five minutes may go by spent on reverb soaked drifting sonic post-rock bliss, before the music erupts again into a wall-of-noise onslaught of rolling double bass and grinding guitars. The affect is certainly suffocating, overwhelming and emotionally draining, but also somehow sleek, postmodern and bleak, kind of bringing to mind Altar Of Plagues' last record that we loved so much around these parts. And although Ion are definitely melodic (even downright pretty) and certainly fit comfortably into the post-black metal spectrum, their music feels too technical and scatterbrained to stand right alongside bands like Alcest or Deafheaven (although there's no reason they won't appeal to fans of those bands). Instead their relentless approach, while still maintaining a constant ear for lush melody, recalls someone like Panopticon. Meanwhile the hints of Isis-style doom and prog-metal flirtation bring to mind bands like Vatnett Viskar or even a much less earthy Agalloch. It's one of our favorite things here at aQ when a local band we've never even heard of comes out of the blue with a release this good. We're thinking they won't be going unnoticed much longer! -

[more of a "cool" story than a cool story. I desperately wanted to blurt it out in the food thread but was able to spare everyone by diverting it here. Also maybe this will bring the thread back to life and remind the constable that it is after new years now so on with the stories.]
A friend, who is Jewish but slightly more observant than me*,on Rosh Hashanah** he accidently ate bacon clam pizza for lunch. True story.
*like he is vaguely atheist not furiously atheist. Also, unlike me, he knows about Jew things/holidays etc that he is supposed to do. He just doesn't do them.
**This is the day that God sits down and checks out your life. If you are being good and observant you get to live for another year otherwise you are written in to the book of death. This is one of the number of ways that the Jewish faith is harsh. It also means, I assume, that anyone who dies is super evil and that old people are all really bad.

Is it just the crustaceans or are you also allergic to mollusks? Crab is good, but clams, especially with white wine, parsley, butter and garlic (pasta optional) is the GD best. I know some people who have allergies to shrimp but can eat clams and mussels all day long.
Softshell crabs are a funny thing to eat because it seems like they are really rubbing it in your face that you are eating bugs. Not that I won't eat bugs. I ate this once back when I was vegan*: http://oaxaquena.yolasite.com/2-grasshopper-taco.php.
I don't recommend those grasshoppers. They aren't good. Escamoles (ant eggs) on the other hand are totally worth trying.
*Before you vegans judge me you should note two things: 1) If you kill mosquitos or ants you should be able to eat them too otherwise you are like one of those sport hunters. 2) I defined all donuts to be vegan no matter what they were made out of. MY LIFE MY RULES

RE:
Oh, and Pitchfork >>>>
and then
Crowbar new album streaming.. Boom
http://pitchfork.com/advance/445-symmetry-in-black/I don't understand why bands/labels do that. I mean I like Profound Lore releases a lot more than I don't. It seems like they are doing a good thing. But why:
Pitchfork have posted a new WOLD track from their upcoming new album "Postsocial". This is a track called "Inner Space Infirmary".
http://pitchfork.com/reviews/tracks/16743-inner-space-infirmary/
The statement for "Postsocial" is here:
http://www.profoundlorerecords.com/wold-postsocial-communique/I mean it seems like they are trying to buddy up with pitchfork to get better reviews or something (or better scores because the words in the reviews make no sense to anyone). I can understand it in Crowbar's case but I mean for Wold? There is a pretty particular subsegment of music listeners that will go out and get this I doubt they are intense Pitchfork readers.
A while ago my friend sent me this, it is an interesting read:* http://no-trivia.tumblr.com/post/64660558089/wondering-what-happens-behind-the-scenes-at-p4k-i-knew
*at least to me as I am generally curious about how music journalism works now and about how it is these days to be an artist especially one on a major label in 2014. I have a couple of friends in this situation (intense brag) and what little they are willing to tell me about it sounds creepy as fuck. And neat in a perverse watching-the-old-gods-die-out kind of way.

I think it has been said before, maybe even by me, but Wold should be listened to if you like the harsh fucked up shit.
The latest is good out on profound lore but I can't find it streaming anywhere. They did release one track I think.Ignore the pitchfork wanking. it is not a 'maximalist core around a meditative middle'. Fuck I hate their writing.
The track is at the bottom of this important analysis of their ability to 'woo'. http://pitchfork.com/reviews/tracks/16743-inner-space-infirmary/ -

Journey - Don't Stop Believin' - Live In 1981 on Vimeo
I was really just reacting to how everyone in like 1997 suddenly had always liked Journey since the 80s. They would then loudly sing along to the chorus and then mumble their way through the rest of the song if it was ever played on a jukebox.
Clearly I am still scarred.
I think it is also an independent video game that a lot of people like but I haven't played it.

Why is there an apostrophe in this thread?
pffftt
This has been haunting me, it is in my subscriptions because I posted in the thread once and it ruins my life. It reminds me of the mural in the great San Francisco cheesesteak place Jay's Cheesesteak. They have a vegetarian version which was very important to me at one point in my life.
At any rate there was a mural in there by Sirron Norris with a cartoon character saying "Everyone has there thing." I think it is this one but the word bubble is unclear.

The young hipsters in the last two pictures don't look very happy at all.
Do those Specialized trispoks slowly siphon away your joie de vivre or what? Does anyone have a picture of a cheery chappy with one?
I like that the second dude is propping up his bike with a u lock but then also standing behind it within arms reach gracing us with his his smoldering gaze.

Lopro with drops. I am not shocked that he didn't ride it much.

I tried another coffee from Solberg ⅋ Hansen.
It is called "Black Coffee" and is a black metal themed coffee, launched during a fashion week, made by guys who wear questionable scarves, and whose coffee roastery is best known for winning design awards from their packaging. There are red flags all over the place.*
I am really enjoying it however. Pleasant strawberries in cream sort of deal. I wonder what it would be like if they natural processed it. At any rate, I approve of almost nothing about it, the package even says "true" on it when it is clearly as "trend" as anything could be. Taste-wise though, solid A-.

Continuing with the Jewish/Israeli* food, that restaurant tommmmmmm posted made me hungry, so I made Shakshuka for brunch yesterday. This is currently on the short list of good egg dishes that I can make. It is basically eggs poached in a spicy tomato and pepper based sauce. It is supposed to be made in individual little pans, but I just make it all in one pan and then serve it onto plates.
For most things I cook I don't remember the ingredients and usually use a bunch of stuff I already have. This one is pretty straightforward though so I will list them:
- jar of canned tomatoes
- tomato paste
- an onion
peppers
these can be a of mildly spicy pepper or two julienned, a bell pepper and then some more spicy ones too, or just a few scoops of spicy ajvar
a bunch of garlic like 5 or 6 cloves.
some cumin (like a half tablespoon [I have done it with seeds or with ground, these days I roast some seeds and then grind them with a mortar and pestle])
generous amount of paprika powder
5-6 eggs
feta cheese (optional but not for me)
parsley (optional but not for me)
In a larger pan (I use one of those le creuset "french" ovens) Cook down the peppers and onion for a few minutes until they are soft. Add in roughly chopped garlic, the cumin and the paprika. Roughly smoosh the canned tomatoes (I use my hands but I am sure an implement could be used) and add them and their liquid to the pan. Add some tomato paste. Season with salt to taste. Cook down for a little bit until it has thickened and stir. The sauce should be like a chunky tomato sauce you would make for pasta but should have a much different flavor thanks to the cumin.
Once the sauce is right, take it off of the burner to add the eggs. People try to say you should create little holes in the sauce for the eggs but that never works for me. I just crack the eggs into the sauce in a ring around the edge of the pan and then one in the center.
Turn the burner down to low, put the pan back on and cover the pan with a lid (this is important otherwise the top of the egg whites wont cook until after the yolks). Simmer until the egg whites are barely set and the yolks are still runny.
Carefully scoop the eggs onto plates with the sauce.
Crumble the cheese on top, then sprinkle on some parsley if you want. I want, always.
Should be eaten with some bread or rolls, the yolks should be runny so you can break them with the bread and mix with the tomato/pepper sauce.
I made this sound way more complicated than it is, it really takes like a half hour to make all told and tastes really good. There are a million blog posts that are probably better at telling you about it and a video of Ottolenghi I think somewhere.
*And in this case north African. I think it is a Sephardic thing, at least amongst Jewishers.
[EDIT here is the link to Ottolenghi's video and recipe. I have tried it with his recipe but I like it my way better tbh http://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2010/apr/16/yotam-ottolenghi-shakshuka-recipe ]
- jar of canned tomatoes

Its cool that the numbers only go up to 3
