when you are racing in a sailing boat there is a starting sequence with flags an horn/gun (class flag ,5,4,1,go) these may vary from event to event but the last gun is normally one minute from the start. its an imaginary line and what you don't want is to be across that line at the start gun (you have to sail around the bouy at the end and recross the line), you want to be crossing that line at speed. so the last minute while the helmsman steers and the rest of the crew are trimming sails/acting as ballast some one is staring at the watch counting down shouting out warnings.

this would be the reason for your countdown i'd wager.

I kill my Paypal account whenever i don't expect to use it for more than a month or so because my girlfriend had one that sat empty and unused and it got used by me to run scam auctions on ebay which ended up with Paypal denying her account had been hacked and threatening to send bailiffs round to collect money which they said she owed buyers even though they had been the ones that alerted her to the hacking in the first place. And fucked if I am letting her do the same to me
