Hello,
I want to try to cycle 110 miles to my girlfriends parents house on December 23rd. I've done the ride before several times so not worried about the distance or route, but I'm wondering about whether it will be much harder in cold winter. I will have about 8 hours daylight, I think I will be in the saddle for 9 hours, so will leave and have the dark part in London and around.
What should I know before I cycle this sort of distance on my own in the cold?
Cheers

Macb I was not offering any fashion advice. I am a bike mechanic. Fashion is not my business. Bicycle mechanics are my business. A saddle angle that promotes penile dis-function is antiporn. A brake block scratching into a Campag Omega rim in anti porn. Using a bright silver cable lock (the £15 kind) wrapped around the headtube is antiporn. I was sad as it is such a special frame, one that should be coveted and could easily be porn.
I also do not see why me being a bike mechanic means I am not allowed to have an opinion as to whether a bike is porn or not. if anything my greater understanding of the machine places me in a marginally better position then most in judging a bike, its components and the general build.
Don't be a pillock.

I wouldn't normally post a customers bike but this made me really really sad. Tommasini Prestige with no foot retention, and a sora/tiagra mix. Oh and rear record hub with campy Omega rim. the rear pad was down to the metal but he wouldn't let me change it. I tried to explain about the rim and how it was really worth looking after... Nope.

Had this on a back burner for about 18 months. It's basically finished now, just need cages, already have black leather straps. It's built up with the intention of doing centuries. I try to do 1 a month and want something I really love to do them on.
Now I know I know I KNOW about the brakes, but this bike is for fun, cycling for the sake of cycling so shity brakes are acceptable. I also agree that shamals would maybe be better (especially the black ones) however I wanted wheels I could easily rebuild and relace depending on my mood (and weight!) and the Halos have proven to be good.

sorry about shit phone pics...

Hi dpres
Hope you can help. I have a chunky MTB frame with horizontal dropouts and was thinking about doing a fixed wheel project on it. Only problem is that as far as i can see there are very few or no mtb sized (wider spacing) fixed hubs on the market. Do you have a solution so you could lace up a thin 26in rims to it if found? THanksI think the best hub for you is the Surly rear mountain fixed, which I can sell for £40. It is spaced to 135mm.
Pm me for a quote if you like.
Cheers

na, good idea. im gonna make some decisions and holler at you. do you have a good supplier for spokes or would it be easier if i sorted all the components myself?
also, how hard is it to un-build a wheelset? i have some dura ace babes on tubs that need a new home i think.
It wouldn't be hard at all, I can supply the spokes and relace the hubs to whatever clincher rims you want. It would be easier for me to supply the parts.
Cheers.

Hi,
I think I have PM'd everyone that got in touch with me and many thanks for all the interest!
Oliveoil I am researching a few options for you so that I can offer you the best possible solution. Tallsams idea would work, but is a bodge and I would always rather do something properly. I'l be in touch via pm when I have a proper solution in mind.
Also I will use Jaz for deliveries within London so delivered wheels are now an option.
Cheers

I am a mechanic and wheel builder at an independent central London bike shop. I am looking for some extra beer money at the moment so thought to offer my wheelbuilding skills freelance.
I can order whatever rim and/or hub you want and will sell them to you at less then retail.
I will now charge 20 pounds labour per wheel I build (like I said, beer money)...
I am happy and experienced in building any spoke pattern you like, regardless of whether its snowflake, radial etc
I am also able to tie and solder wheels.
I will warranty the first 30 wheels I build for a year.
Contact me via pm to get a quote for a build.
The wheels will be built at my home, in camden, so that is where collection will be, no postage.
All sold wheels will include a donation to the forum.
If I am completely barking up the wrong tree and this is a bolloks idea please accept my apology in advance.
**EDIT - from now on can I be contacted via my mobile telecommunications device as I am often not able to check LFGSS for a day or so. Also more can be expressed in a call rather then exchanging PMs. If you are shy and dont like calling strangers then obviously PM me, but expect a few days wait...
My number is 07five15onefive273zero.

Cheers. -
