I must be getting old, I’ve built a road bike with full guards and am excited about it

I was sceptical of the garmin radar but was riding in the vosges with a mate who had one and was soon convinced of their benefits. Am keen to buy one as ever since moving to Cornwall riding has never felt so precarious. Before I drop £150 on a rear light, does anyone either have one for sales here (already posted a wanted ad but no luck) or alternatively have a suggestion of a radar beater?

Thanks for the response. I’m aware what the claw end of a hammer is for but appreciate you taking the time to explain it just in case. I have various crowbars and hammers all of which have helped with the extraction of the old brads but the problem is that many of them are totally rusted and corroded from historic damp and some refused to budge regardless of whether I wiggled them side to side, front to back, spoke in tongues, or prayed to a higher power. The heads were far too soft and corroded to offer any resistance to the claw and just crumbled when attempted and often when wiggling they’d just snap. The damp must have been very bad as half of the boards had been removed and replaced with ply that looked to date to the 70s.

Anyway, what brads snapped and couldn’t be removed have been punched down, the joists have been reinforced where necessary, the boards have been cut and nailed down (except for a few by the consumer unit and mains water pipes that instead have been screwed to allow easy access should we need to in the future) and the floor is down and ready for next weekend’s task… sanding. I haven’t sanded floors in about fifteen years so I guess I’m due another round.

We want to replace some of the hideous radiators in our Victorian house. Does anyone here have experience of the cast iron Victorian ones - buying new ones that is and whether they’re worth it over more modern designs? We are trying to renovate the house sympathetically

They are a real mix of old nails, newer nails, screws and even no nails.

I’m moving around a lot of the boards to better stagger how they are because at the moment there are a lot of ugly clear runs of cuts and joins.

Will re-nail down the boards. Where there are any old nail holes that go un-used is the best thing to just mix up some sawdust and pva and fill with that?

Yes indeed! Is it worth putting on the sides and underneath of boards too or just stick to the joists?

Reinstating some reclaimed floorboards on this lovely Friday. Some spectacularly bodged bits of carpentry which are a treat to discover. A lot of the old nails won’t come up… is the best option to grind them off?

Well I’ve not bothered fitting guards yet but I’ve managed to get a couple of hundred kms on this. Still need to set tubeless tyres up which will be a job for tomorrow and am still fiddling with saddle, bars and levers

@LeBlaireau and @MechaMorgan what gubbins did you use to attach your front PDW guards to your forks... the set of fenders I bought didn't come with the necessary bits!

They're only human! Did they put a rubber washer between fork crown and the metal hanger or just the standard metal washer that PDW supply?

Installing PDW guards on my Standert ready for winter duties. Assuming it's wise to use a rubber washer between where the front guard metal hanger attaches to the back of the fork crown? PDW don't supply one with their mounting kit...
