What worries me is how much of the new capabilities in Google Android are happening in Google Play Services rather than in the Android core that's released as AOSP. I understand they're annoyed at Phone makers and networks lagging behind with updated builds for their devices, and putting the features into PS lets consumers update via the market even if the handset's doomed never to progress beyond Gingerbread.

This also means people building on AOSP like Amazon and Beidu can't rely on Google paying for all the difficult work. On the other hand, Android core becomes less relevant so when people say Android, they mean Samsung Touchwiz + Google + Android, HTC Sense + Google + Android, rather than understanding what Android really is. Android doesn't have an RMS insisting people refer to it as HTC/Google/Android in the manner of GNU/Linux.

I agree with the other things you said. But I actually think having the functionality in a layer above the OS is a great way of dealing with the fragmentation problem Android has faced (and will continue to face). Amazon is not interested the 'Play Services' any way since most of the features in that layer are Google service specific. Plus being apps I am sure they can be side loaded on to a rooted Kindle tablet without issue should a user wish to do so.

I got Asus Memopad HD7 yesterday. Basically a revised Nexus 7 (2012) minus some processing power but with an SD slot. Really highly recommended, also priced very well at £130. Needed a new tablet since I gave the Nexus to my dad. Still looking for a mid range handset to replace the Xperia Ray.

Finished the story mode on GTA5 over the weekend. Still lots of things to do, but I going to try online again tonight.

Just ordered some - not tried them before so lets see how it goes.

I've ridden through here a number of times, and it was on the 50 fixed ladies ride.

I don't live far from there, and ride through there all the time. Actually that is where I thought we were going on Sunday. Since I thought the 'Brompton Oratory' was the building in the cemetery.

Saw 'Runner, Runner' over the weekend. Watchable, not amazing, not crap either. Not to long, wait for the DVD though.

I watched Oblivion the other day. Not a bad scifi film I guess. But 5m minutes in, I figured out the whole plot. When this was confirmed 80% in I turned it off.

Looper - 4/10 - trash - started quite well, had hopes of a dystopian future Clockwork Orange vibe - but then it turned into child actor speaks impossibly profound lines beyond their years

Don't get me started on the whole time paradox in this movie. I still thought it was quite watchable though.

GTA5 - at 22% already - landing a plane is hard, took me a few goes.

I just hit buy on the Humble Indie Bundle 9 too - even though I know I'm not going to touch any of those games for a few weeks at least. Mark of the Ninja, FTL and FEZ alone make it a deal you can't pass up on.
