some years ago i had a worn chain and sprocket set up on mountain bike , going up hill out of saddle pushing hard, chain jumped and i went out the side
cracked wrist and elbow. had to ride home a good few miles , hills , peak district, was like electric shock down arm every time i tried to use the brake!! then docs tors said i hadnt broke it , just a strain , carry on lifting things etc.
then a week later rang me up and said they had "looked at the x rays again and i had broke my wrist , come back" in took pics of wrist and elbow and said i had broken both !! all ok now though , new chain front and rear sprockets, cheers

i will take it off and see but i think the larger chain wheel is bolted to the guard ring and then the guard ring has fingers on it and these are also bolted to the arms on the crank . i will post some little pics if that is the case when i have it apart later today . if so i will l leave it as is till i get a better crank, thanks for replies

hi again,
thanks for the comments
if i unbolt it then the big ring comes off as well, as the big ring is mounted on it . i was thinking of cutting the guard ring off but save the bolts etc that hold the large ring on .. but hey i am trying to make it look more than it is so perhaps i should just leave it as is...or get some smarter cranks, the bike by the way is a 1953 king of mercia that i have just rebuilt and will strip down again and paint when i am happy with all the components
cheers

cheers mate
sheldon brown makes a good point about them and also comments that they might not do you any good in an accident like a blunt knife to the groin !!
i have a pair of shimano sis ones i shall try them
and i have realised i have a damaged boss on the frame the one just above bb on drive side that guides rear gear cable to the chainstay tube i shall have to visit mercian next week and see what they say
i am near derby anyway

quote
"I need to hear jolly stories of your cycling exploits."well heres one
when i was 16 my mate Tim and i were bike mad, belonged to cheltenham and gloucester cycling club.
in the summer his father died and at the funeral his cousin who was about thirty started ribbing us about cyclingtim's mum had invited me to join tim and his young brother and her on a weeks holiday in a cottage near stranrear in scotland
tims cousin knew this and said if we were so good we could ride there. tim said we would and then got over excited and said we would do it in 2 days. his cousin said he would bet us 15 pounds on that - a lot of money at the time. so a week and a bit later we set off from cheltenham on our dawes red feather 5 speed bikes. we pulled into kendal mid evening and had a meal at a b and b and walked into the town a little way and had a couple of underage beersnext morning up early back on the bikes , up shap and down to carlilse gretna, dumfries lockerby and that evening into stranrear or at least nearby where the cottage was . done in 2 days, 420 miles we got our money and we put the bikes on the train to go back home !!
